Dan’s Daily: Penguins Hiring; CBJ Trades Laine; Goalie Wants Trade
The Pittsburgh Penguins made nine new hires Monday and promoted from within. We published our full review of the 2024 Penguin offseason transactions, but the big news of the day was the widespread disappointment at the Penguins’ big miss. The NHL trade chatter surrounding Patrik Laine ended as the Montreal Canadiens snagged the former 40-goal scorer, and there was plenty of immediate reaction. The Nashville Predators hotshot goalie prospect isn’t happy that he’s blocked and has requested a trade. Lastly, this morning is decision day for the Edmonton Oilers to match offer sheets for Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.
How interesting that Edmonton worked the trade market to move salary only to drag their feet on matching the offers. They did not do so on Monday and the players do not appear on the teams’s website.
Broberg at $4.5 million is a healthy deal, and getting St.Louis’s second-rounder might be attractive. Could Edmonton GM Stan Bowman feel they can equal the performance at a lower price? The plot thickens.

The Penguins replaced retired trainer Chris Stewart and filled some other important roles, including one analytics guru from an MLB team. Check out the new Penguins front office hires.

Steelers Now: OK, after the gong show on Saturday night, in which the Steelers produced the fewest points in over 20 years, Alan Saunders projects the Steelers 53-man roster.
NHL Trade, News & National Hockey Now
Montreal Hockey Now: First, Patrik Laine is now a Montreal Canadien. Here’s the initial Canadiens trade story.
Marc Dumont dove into the deep end of the Canadiens’ big trade. GM Kent Hughes said Laine not only accepted the increased pressure that comes from playing in Montreal but is looking forward to it. Dumont breaks down the trade and what it means for the immediately improved Montreal Canadiens.
TSN: First, Yaroslav Askirov asked for a trade. After Juuse Saros signed an eight-year deal, there’s no net for the blue-chip prospect. However, GM Barry Trotz publicly shot down that possibility. Askarov is expected to be in the Predators training camp.
Philly Hockey Now: Jon Bailey writes there is one perfect fit for Askarov. The Flyers are currently without a bedrock goalie, and Bailey makes a good case that the Flyers have what the Predators need to make the deal. Here’s the Flyers trade potential.
Ottawa Hockey Now: Getting to know the new goalie, the guy who could very well (finally) return the Ottawa Senators to the playoffs, Mr. Linus Ullmark.

It’s a short Daily today. Aside from the Laine stuff, there just wasn’t much to go with. However, I think the Laine trade has peeled back a few more layers of Penguins analysis that I can dive into.
