Dan’s Daily: Penguins Defense, Could Ducks Fill Trade Market, and Canadiens Drama
There are rare times when a Carolina Hurricanes visit to the Montreal Canadiens would make headlines on a Thursday night in October. Combine the panic over Montreal’s 0-4 start with the sniping between the two organizations, which began this summer when Carolina signed RFA Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and it’s going to be a pressure cooker at the Centre Bell. The Anaheim Ducks could fill the NHL trade rumor pages, and the Pittsburgh Penguins defense is getting some help from itself.
The Penguins practice again today. This little break in the schedule is too early. November is a wild ride of 14 games in 30 days.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: This summer, Brian Dumoulin took John Marino under his wing, and the Boston boys hit the ice. Marino looks much better than he did as a sophomore NHL’er. Todd Reirden told the tale.Â
The Penguins coaches put Mike Matheson with Chad Ruhwedel to keep Marino with Marcus Pettersson. Yes, the coaches are digging the Marino-Pettersson duo, too.Â
NHL News, NHL Trade Rumors, and National Hockey Now
Montreal: The Montreal Canadiens are 0-4. They won’t admit it, but there’s panic at the disco. On Thursday, GM Marc Bergevin ripped his team’s attitude and admitted that Shea Weber is a “long shot” ever to play again.Â
And just for fun, it’s Carolina and Kotkaniemi as their next opponent. That should be fun, eh?
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman’s 32 Thoughts consistently churn up NHL trade rumors. Friedman noted the Ducks have a handful of pending UFAs, such as Ryan Getzlaf and Rickard Rackell, and contacts are not close with any of them. The New York Rangers tried to get Vitaly Kravtsov to come back to New York, and the Rangers have salary cap hell ahead.
Boston: The Flyers are red-hot out of the gate. The Boston U boys who wear orange and black plastered the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. Joe Haggerty has the takeaways, the black eyes, and more.
Washington: The Washington Capitals swallowed hard and kept Evgeny Kuznetsov around. The dirty bird is now taking flight, “He’s rekindled that joy…”
Florida: I know we talked a lot about the Pittsburgh Penguins snagging Brandon Montour on the NHL trade market. Florida took the plunge, and they are being rewarded.Â
Detroit: The Red Wings are now Steve Yzerman’s team. The responsibility and the present are now on his shoulders after a couple of years of transition. Here’s how Yzerman is building the Red Wings.
Vegas: I know many of you follow the Vegas Golden Knights–St. Louis got the better of Vegas on Wednesday 3-1. Steve Carp’s three takeaways.Â
San Jose: It used to be a big deal when Erik Karlsson returned to Ottawa. The longtime franchise player is back in Ottawa, but…as Sheng Peng writes…the feels are gone.Â
