It wasn’t a great day for 2017 Pittsburgh Penguins heroes Wednesday. After a couple of Hockey Now outlets indirectly reported it was already decided, former Penguins winger Patric Hornqvist announced his retirement. Also, the Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to unload goalie Matt Murray via the NHL trade market or a second buyout window. The Penguins will get a second buyout window as Drew O’Connor filed for arbitration, Dave Molinari looked at one Penguins prospect who wants to turn pro now instead of next year, and the list of remaining free agents is starting to look sparse.

Dave Molinari also set up the rest of the Penguins off-season. July 5 was a target date for president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas to begin the Penguins GM search.

And it’s Day 4 of the Penguins not acquiring Erik Karlsson, but there are lingering hopes and rumors.
