NHL Trade talk, Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins analysis

The Pittsburgh Penguins rallied for a point against the second-best team in the Western Conference, yet they didn’t seem too thrilled with their performance. We dug deep into the Penguins’ performance and the burgeoning goalie controversy. Elsewhere in the Daily, Toronto looks ahead to the cost of Mitch Marner. The Calgary Sun looks at the price tag for top center Elias Lindholm on the NHL trade block. Injuries have hit the Anaheim Ducks’ top trade chips, and Corey Perry could soon be available to other teams.

I’m heading to Raleigh today for the Penguins and Hurricanes on Saturday. I’m not sure what time the good Lord will send me on my way. I suspect I’ll cover practice and then leave. It has been 15 years since I’ve been to Raleigh, so any restaurant recommendations are welcome! Let’s avoid distant suburbs and strip malls.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: It wasn’t the night that Alex Nedeljkovic wanted, but it sure looks like there’s a Penguins goalie controversy.

Those Vancouver Canucks are a much different team under coach Rick Tocchet. And one Penguins forward had praise for Cutter Gauthier. Dave Molinari’s Penguins notebook.

And for the postgame.

Vancouver scored a couple of first-period goals on pretty tip plays, but the Penguins got to work. It took until the final minute, but Sidney Crosby scored a goal in the final minute to force overtime. Get the Penguins recap here.

The Penguins did things increasingly well. Sidney Crosby scored twice, and they made some whopper mistakes in the defensive zone but eventually got back to even. It was a hard point with a new twist in the goalie battle. Get the Penguins report card.

Steelers

The boys do a daily podcast. Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith talk about the growing optimism for a Steelers upset.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

The Athletic ($): Julian McKenzie laid out the price tag for Elias Lindholm, which was a lot less than I would have guessed. Lindholm could be a surprisingly affordable option on the NHL trade market.

Toronto Sun video: All righty. Mega deals for Auston Matthews and William Nylander. What does that mean for Mitch Marner’s negotiations, which can begin on July 1?

Sportsnet: Oh boy. A day after the team announced that Trevor Zegras would be out for a couple of months after ankle surgery, John Gibson suffered an upper-body injury.

Elliotte Friedman reports that a decision could be rendered soon for former Chicago Blackhawks forward Corey Perry, whose contract was terminated by Chicago for unspecified actions.

Philly Hockey Now: Former Penguins forward Ryan Poehling is having a time in Philly. He’s getting regular ice time, producing, and seems to have earned his way into coach John Tortorella’s good graces with hard play. Our Jon Bailey and Ryan had a chat, “I love it here,” Poehling said of the Philadelphia Flyers.

NYI Hockey Now: The coach pushed some buttons, and that sparked some “want to.” The New York Islanders rallied for a win over Toronto.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Tampa Bay beat New Jersey in OT. Without Jack Hughes and others, here are the new look New Jersey Devils lines.
