Dan’s Daily: CBJ Makes Another Trade, Cost for Penguins Goalie Swap

PIttsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin, Columbus Blue Jackets

The NHL usually wants teams to keep a lid on the news until after the Stanley Cup Final. Given the truncated schedule, NHL teams flung open the doors this week. The NHL trade market came alive with goalies, and we looked at the likely prices the Pittsburgh Penguins would pay. The Columbus Blue Jackets are loading up with pretty good defensemen. Patrick Roy wants another shot at the NHL (as a coach), and the Vegas Golden Knights took the day off.

Greetings from the McCarran international airport. No, I’m not heading back to Pittsburgh but to Fort Lauderdale for Game 4. I had a refundable ticked and planned to stay back in Vegas if they couldn’t sweep. However, the OT period pushed the game’s conclusion past my 24-hour window to cancel the flight. Thanks, boys.

The next 36 hours are going to be fun. I’m flying in and out of Fort Lauderdale, doing the morning skate, having a business meeting, heading to the arena for Game 4, writing postgame, going for a beer with the boys, and then straight to the airport. I hope I have a row to myself on the way back. Thirty-six hours, little sleep, and no showers. I’m going to be a well-dressed, drooling, stinky mess. When this job finally finishes me off, send pizza, DOTS, and Swedish Fish to my interment.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins also have a few RFAs. It’s no slam dunk they all return. Here’s Dave Molinari’s view on the Penguins’ free agents.

PHN+: The NHL trade market is exploding with goalies. Per usual, I used the recent history to figure out real-world trade values. Would you pay the likely price for John Gibson or Connor Hellebuyck? For our subscribers, can Dubas afford to pull the trigger on his first Penguins trade?

Steelers Now:

The top 5 winners from the Steelers OTAs.

The OTAs may have exposed a draft steal in progress. Here’s the Steelers analysis.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

What the absolute bloody hell is going on here? The Pirates blew out the Mets, but there was a fan brawl at PNC Park.

If yinz can’t act right, ya ain’t alowd to go no more.

A four-strikeout game may have saved the season for Ke’Bryan Hayes.

PBN+: Almost as crazy as the fight, Rich Hill tossed more than 100 pitches. He’s becoming an ageless wonder for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

However, some bad news. Vince Velasquez underwent season-ending elbow surgery. Pirates news.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

New Jersey Hockey Now: Wow. “I couldn’t be happier to be going to Columbus.” The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired Ivan Provorov one day. Then continued pilfering the Metro Division defensemen Friday when they snagged Damon Severson in a New Jersey Devils sign-and-trade.

The Devils have a few pretty good free agents, too. Our new beat reporter James Nichols did some digging. Here’s who is talking to the New Jersey Devils.

Philly Hockey Now: We were sad to lose beat reporter Sam Carchidi in Philly (though Chuck Bausman has come in like a house of fire). Here’s what Sam is working on: a TV show about the 1974-75 Broad Street Bullies.

Pretty cool, eh?

Washington Hockey Now: The pressing debate in D.C. No, not the Trump indictment, but whether Anthony Mantha will remain with the Washington Capitals.

If you put a Trump/Biden comment below, I will send 36 pizzas to your house, C.O.D.

Stanley Cup Final:

Vegas Hockey Now: A weakness in the Florida PK? The Golden Knights think they found one and exploited it for two PPGs in Game 3. The boys needed a day off Friday. Vegas Golden Knights news.

Florida Hockey Now: Bob was back. Sergei Bobrovsky breathed new life into the Florida Panthers.
