Pittsburgh Penguins, Brian Boyle

The Pittsburgh Penguins were without their top three forwards and one of their top-four defensemen. Usually, the Penguins wait until mid-season to reach such levels of lineup decimation. The 2021-22 Penguins got a headstart on injuries and a jump on surprising us talking heads who think it’s all too much.

And the Penguins won 6-2 over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

Lest you think the Pittsburgh Penguins were without stars, I submit Dominik Simon. Brian Boyle. And Danton Heinen (but Heinen doesn’t draw the same heat that Simon does).

“We were doing everything in fives, in all three zones, and that’s when our team’s at its best,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “You know, our best defense takes place, 150, 160 feet away from our net with our puck pursuit game.”

Simon had the quote of the night.
