Injured Pittsburgh Penguins winger Bryan Rust joined his teammates for practice Friday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. So did newly acquired forward Michael Bunting.

Rust, who switched from a white jersey to a black one just as practice was starting, was full contact, according to Penguins coach Mike Sullivan. Rust is on IR because of an upper-body injury.

Rust and Drew O’Connor (concussion) skated separately before practice. O’Connor did not join practice.

Bunting, wearing No. 8 at practice, was part of the trade with Carolina that was finalized Thursday night that sent Jake Guentzel to the Hurricanes.

Forward Jansen Harkins did not practice, was placed on IR and will be out indefinitely. He had hand surgery Friday morning, according to Sullivan. Harkins left Thursday’s loss against Washington at some point after he fought Beck Malenstyn in the second period.

Also not on the ice was defenseman Chad Ruhwedel, who was traded Friday morning to the New York Rangers.

Forwards Valtteri Puustinen, Jonathan Gruden and Joona Koppanen were assigned to  Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a trade deadline move.

The NHL trade deadline strikes at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Penguins travel later Friday to Boston for an afternoon game Saturday against the Bruins, who are ranked second in the Eastern Conference.
