Dan’s Daily: McCann Part of Kraken COVID Outbreak, Penguins Official Roster

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Drew O'Connor

That’s just some bad luck. Five Seattle Kraken will miss the team’s inaugural game after a small COVID outbreak, including former Pittsburgh Penguins Jared McCann and Jamie Oleksiak. The Penguins released their official 23-player roster, but it’s probably not the final roster before tonight’s season debut. Evander Kane is a non-roster player while the NHL completes several investigations, including a faked COVID vaccination card, and former Penguins center Brandon Sutter continues to battle COVID after seven months.

Look, I don’t want to talk about COVID any more than you do, but here we are. As long as large swaths of society are unprotected, it’s going to keep swirling like a tornado. The bright spot is two million more people were vaccinated this week. If you’re on the fence–see today’s unfortunate story regarding Brandon Sutter–a young, healthy individual.

Hockey…

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins released their 23-player roster. Drew O’Connor and Radim Zohorna were re-assigned, but it’s probably not the Penguins final roster before tonight’s game.

The complete Pittsburgh Penguins 2021-22 Predictions and prognostications, too.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Quick note: We had to delay the launches of Toronto Hockey Now, Montreal, and Calgary because of some unforeseen circumstances. My life is never dull; Shark Tank and pre-existing contracts. I hope this is the last delay. They launch tomorrow before the Habs and Leafs begin their season.

Vancouver: Brandon Sutter was part of the Canucks COVID outbreak late last season (before the vaccine was readily available). Sutter is still suffering the effects, including debilitating fatigue.

NYI: The Islanders have carried the last team carrying the Metro flag in each of the last two playoffs. In the words of Sean Astin at the bottom of the well in Goonies, “this is our time,” or so they think. Five looming questions over the New York Islanders.

Sportsnet: In their six bold predictions, Sportsnet’s Rory Boylen predicted the Pittsburgh Penguins AND Philadelphia Flyers miss the playoffs.

Vegas: I know a lot of you are Vegas Golden Knights fans. Here are the major storylines to follow with the desert crusaders.

TSN: Without Auston Matthews and others in the lineup, the Toronto Maple Leafs have to do some serious line juggling this week. Matthews will miss the first few games.

CP: The Seattle Kraken has five players in the COVID protocol ahead of their first game, including Jared McCann and Jamie Oleksiak.

San Jose: The Sharks kept most of their top prospects on the final roster, including the sixth overall pick, William Eklund. The kids are being served.

Detroit: Failed PTOs. Alex Chiasson didn’t stick on his PTO in Vancouver. And, sadly, Bobby Ryan did not stick with the Detroit Red Wings out of camp, and he’s now a free agent.
