Dan’s Daily: Penguins RW Grade Well, Flames Begin Chase of Huberdeau

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL trade deadline, Bryan Rust

The hockey news this summer has had a sour taste. From Hockey Canada, University of Michigan, Russia and more, aggressively bad behavior has been a theme. And so it may have cost the New York Islanders an assistant coach, though no official reason was given for removing Brian Wiseman only a few weeks after his hire. TSN graded the RWs for all 32 teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dave Molinari agrees with Penguins GM Ron Hextall’s cautious move with prospects, and Sportsnet has already turned the page to the 2023 UFAs. The Calgary Flames have begun pursuit of Jonathan Huberdeau.

And the Pittsburgh Steelers made some Penguins-related news, too.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Sports Now Group PGH

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Mr. Dave Molinari writes that he agrees with GM Ron Hextall, who allowed his prospects only limited participation in the coming prospects tournament next month in Buffalo. Full story and opinion. Pittsburgh Penguins analysis.

Steelers Now: Former Penguins CEO David Morehouse has a new job. The former political operative turned sports team business operations was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mitch Trubisky is struggling in Latrobe. Mason Rudolph is not. After a good first week of practice, Rudolph took first-team reps and is moving the offense at Chuck Noll field. Alan Saunders and Nick Farabaugh are on the field with coverage. Pittsburgh Steelers QB decisions.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Brian Reynolds walk-off homer! Pirates win, 8-7.

Coverage of the farm, too. We do a daily recap of the kids working their way up through the minors. Endy Rodrigues had a night. Pirates Prospects watch.

NHL News and National Hockey Now:

NYI Hockey Now: Stefen Rosner has uncovered what is possibly the reason for the Islanders’ mysterious termination of assistant coach Brian Wiseman, just weeks after hiring him on July 5. The current problems at the University of Michigan may have brought new light to an old story; resurfaced allegations of a 1991 sexual assault and the story of Wiseman’s 1996 trial hit social media. Wiseman was acquitted in a second trial after the first was declared a mistrial. Full story on the New York Islanders situation.

TSN: The Pittsburgh Penguins rank “solid” as TSN ranks all 32 teams’ right-wings.

Sportsnet: Already looking ahead to the 2023 UFAs, including Tristan Jarry, who could hit the market.

Boston Hockey Now: An old trade story is surfacing. At the 2016 NHL Draft, the Florida Panthers tried … and tried hard .. to get the 14th overall pick because they wanted Charlie McAvoy, but so, too, did the Boston Bruins.

Washington Hockey Now: A few Capitals and Daniel Sprong are lighting up the 3v3 league. Washington Capitals summer fun.

Colorado Hockey Now: The Bruins draft class of 2013 is now gone, with just over 100 games of NHL value. Anton Blidh signed as a free agent with the Colorado Avalanche.

Vegas Hockey Now: Depth charts — how about defense? That’s a good place to be strong. The blue line is the new backbone of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Calgary Hockey Now: The trade rocked the NHL and reset the NHL trade market. Matthew Tkachuk to Florida. The Flames received a pair of pending UFAs in Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar, and prospect Cole Schwindt. The courtship of Huberdeauhas begun as Flames GM Brad Treliving flew to Montreal to meet Huberdeau in person and pitch a long-term contract. That’s what the kids call a “baller move.” Calgary Flames news.
