Steve Mears Joins Bourque on Radio; TV Crew Changes

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ broadcast picture for the coming season has come largely into focus.

And it is decidedly different than in past seasons.

Steve Mears, who previously had handled the play-by-play duties on TV, will shift to radio, where he will join analyst Phil Bourque.

Josh Getzoff, the former radio play-by-play man, has moved into Mears’ old job on the telecasts.

Dan Potash, rinkside reporter since 2005, will now be the studio host for coverage that will expand to an hour before and after games.

Hailey Hunter, daughter of former Pittsburgh Penguins winger Tim Hrynewich (or “Hrendachuk,” as then-GM Eddie Johnston was inclined to call him), is the new rinkside reporter. She comes off a stint covering golf for the Golf Channel and PGA Tour Entertainment.

There is no word on a replacement for Bob Errey, the long-time analyst on telecasts who was fired Sept. 1.

Just a terrible look all around. Mears’ In a tough spot, otherwise idk how he stays and maintains any self respect. More than anything, Bob Errey being unceremoniously removed from the organization is just a complete loss and a bad look for ownership. It’s next to impossible to find guys who are funny without trying to be funny and as a result coming off as contrived and pandering. Now add on top of that a level of hockey knowledge that only a handful of people on earth have, and you start to really narrow the pool. Top it off with… Read more »

I agree with every point in Bill’s comment. But I would have kept Errey over Mears, I do like Geztoff and I think he and Errey would be a good team. I wonder why the powers that be did not like Errey….And yes, what about Jay? I hope he stays, I learned so much from his analysis of plays and such. This whole thing is a dumpster fire. Did they need a woman to fill the job at the rinkside? Maybe she played hockey in college or does dad being a player qualify her. My dad was a golf pro,… Read more »

Mears and Errey stunk to high heaven. They were consistently evaluated as one of the work broadcast teams in the league. I think Mears will be much better on radio with Bourque. Potash is really good and was the best part of the former TV broadcast so expanding his role makes sense. Bob Errey was very stale and I hope the team uses more modern former players who have a better sense of today’s NHL.
