It was the kind of game the Pittsburgh Penguins have played several times this season but failed to follow up. After winning five straight, the Penguins had lost four of five, and the storm clouds were again gathering as they faced one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Surely, they would lose, right? And then what?

Instead, the Penguins submitted one of their best games this season and beat Toronto 3-2 at PPG Paints Arena.

Unlikely heroes and necessary performances filled the score sheet. Goalie Tristan Jarry was brilliant. Fourth-line center Noel Acciari was the game’s second star with a goal and a perfect screen, allowing Erik Karlsson to score the game-winner.

Yet, the power play, “we’ll see where it goes,” said coach Mike Sullivan.
