Penguins Playoffs Scenario: Caps Choke, Pens Take Control (Barely)

The Pittsburgh Penguins took a major step toward securing a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs Thursday night.

They also treaded water in their attempt to climb toward third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Their 6-5 overtime victory against Detroit at PPG Paints Arena lifted them into the second wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Red Wings. Washington and Philadelphia.

The Capitals, who had held the second wild card, slipped behind the Penguins after absorbing a 4-2 loss in Buffalo.

The Flyers hung in the race for a playoff spot by defeating the New York Rangers, 4-1.

The Penguins, Capitals and Detroit have three games remaining, the Flyers have two.

The New York Islanders’ 3-2 overtime victory over Montreal allowed them to remain three points ahead of the Penguins in the fight for third place in the Metro. New York has three games left.
