The first game of the 2022 season in the stadium whose new name people love to hate takes place Saturday when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Seattle Seahawks at 7 p.m. in a preseason contest at Acrisure Stadium. Mitch Trubisky will start at quarterback for the Steelers. That shouldn’t come as a surprise as he has been getting the most reps with the first team during training camp.

Signed to a two-year, $14-million contract as a free agent in the offseason, Trubisky seems to have the upper hand over veteran holdover Mason Rudolph and first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett in the three-way QB competition.

Trubisky is expected to play the first quarter before yielding to Rudolph. Tomlin’s plan is to have Pickett play the fourth quarter.

The experience edge goes to Trubisky, who started 50 games with the Chicago Bears in four seasons after being the second overall pick in the 2017 draft. Trubisky spent last season with the Buffalo Bills but attempted just eight passes while backing up Josh Allen.

Geno Smith and Drew Lock will both see action as they compete to be the Seahawks’ starting quarterback. Coach Pete Carroll said Smith will start and be followed by Lock but would not commit to how much playing team each will get.

Smith, who starred collegiately at West Virginia, started three games for the Seahawks last season when Wilson was injured. Seattle lost two of those games, including falling 23-20 in overtime in Week 6 at what was then known as Heinz Field.

Lock came to the Seahawks in the Wilson trade. Lock was the Broncos’ second-round draft pick in 2019 and made 21 starts in three seasons for them.

In 2020, Lock started 13 games. However, he lost his starting job to Teddy Bridgewater last year in training camp.

Lock was impressive last weekend in a scrimmage running the second-team offense against the Broncos’ first-team defense. He seemed to close the gap with Smith with that performance.

The Seahawks have gone 26-17 in the preseason under Carroll but were 1-2 in 2021.

The quarterbacks on both teams have reason to be motivated. However, the competition seems more real with the Seahawks than the Steelers as Trubisky is almost certain to start in Week 1.

Smith and Lock have both been good enough to start in the NFL in the past. That gives the Seahawks an edge in this game.
