Dan’s Daily: Squashing Trade Rumors; Penguins Path Forward
SEATTLE — The Pittsburgh Penguins path forward will require a lot more of the intensity they brought to the fight against the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday. There is also one guy, who colleague Dave Molinari circled that could pile up the points for the Penguins, who have reasons for optimism. Elsewhere in the Daily, multiple players and teams did their best to squash the NHL trade rumors as innuendo became speculation and reported. And the Dallas Stars pulled the first big trade of the deadline season by snatching Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames for less than a first-rounder.
I wish I could tell you that my second visit to Seattle was better than the first. However, it’s only marginally better. I like food, but not overpaying for it. Since I don’t enjoy seafood, I stopped at a little French bistro near the Pike Market (where they throw the fish, which is pretty cool). After looking at the menu, I had no idea what I ordered. I just picked something with “grande” in the title, and it might have been the first time I had pate. Not bad.
After that, I wanted cheap and easy for dinner, so I went to a cozy pizza place around the corner. Slices in the window– that’s my kind of place, but $32-36 for four slices, and no single slices?! I was too sheepish to walk out after they seated me. I just wanted one, damn you!
Downtown Seattle breaks my heart, and that’s all I’ll put in print. That’s a monkfish in the first picture.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: A look at the effects of players being together for 18 years. Rampant Negativity. But I am terribly sorry to report that there is indeed real hope for the Penguins’ situation.

I think it’s important to stay current on the competition, too. The Penguins are the X-factor in the Eastern Conference power rankings.
A “sky high” price. The NHL trade rumors surrounding Jake Guentzel.
NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now
Calgary Hockey Now: Bang. The first big shoe to drop in the run-up to the deadline. The Dallas Stars held firm and got Chris Tanev for a steal from the Calgary Flames.
Huge get. Perfect fit.
Philly Hockey Now: The Tanev trade indirectly affects the Flyers, who have two defensemen on the trade block. Jon Bailey writes why he thinks the Flyers can still get a first-rounder for Sean Walker.
Sportsnet: Rory Boyland puts everyone on the table. Who should be buying, and who should be selling at the deadline?
TSN: I don’t know where the first report came from, but Brady Tkachuk popped up in the NHL trade rumors. GM Steve Staios got out in front and immediately shot them down, but he did leave the door open and a crack on Jakob Chychrun.
San Jose Hockey Now: It’s not easy being a player on the block. Your name is in print every day. You’re going here, maybe there, the price is too high … you get the idea. Goalie Kaapo Kahkonen knows the drill. He’s just living the dream, trying not to let it get to him or the San Jose Sharks.
And lastly,
TSN: The five charged players from 2018 Team Canada have selected a jury trial.
