Tuesday morning, coach Mike Sullivan announced Tristan Jarry as the starting goalie. However, as warmup began, only Casey DeSmith was present. Jarry was not on the ice, nor was a second goalie.

UPDATED: A late Penguins tweet with the lineup indicated Jarry was unavailable due to injury.

The Penguins will be in an emergency backup situation should DeSmith suffer an injury. Mike Chiasson is the Penguins’ EBUG. Chiasson is a goalie coach at the UPMC Lemieux Complex and the Penguins’ youth hockey manager.

Chiasson is 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, and would wear No. 40.

Tommy Nappier was re-assigned to the Wheeling Nailers from the WBS Penguins today. Taylor Gauthier is also in Wheeling. Gauthier appeared in the Penguins training camp and development camp last summer.

This season, Jarry is 16-5-5 with a .921 save percentage. He allowed just one goal in regulation against the New Jersey Devils Sunday afternoon.

DeSmith made his 20th appearance and 19th start this season. He is 6-9-3 with a .904 save percentage and .321 goals-against-average.

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang indeed returned to the lineup for the first time since Dec. 28. He was activated from LTIR later Tuesday afternoon.

He was playing well in his 2 games back hope it’s not long term. No offense to DeSmith but Jarry is clearly better than him this season..

Meanwhile other teams are much more aggressive on the PP and instead of waiting on their opponent, they take the initiative and drive to the net, making things happen. It is really frustrating to watch and the ability to finish has been lacking. The “pretty play” mentality isn’t helpful especially when the PK has been struggling as well.
