Sunday morning, 9:30 a.m. ET, the Aaron Rodgers New York Jets era comes to a head. The Week 5 NFL odds have the Jets as +2.5 dogs. Sitting at 2-2, the Jets desperately need a win to turn the season positive and stay in the AFC East race.

In their way? Former third overall pick Sam Darnold. Darnold is experiencing a renaissance in the Twin Cities. Darnold got dumped by the Jets after two painful seasons.

Can the Jets fly to a victory and deliver the promise of having a Hall of Fame quarterback under center?

Here are my best bets for the NFL season’s first game from London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Are the Jets Bullies?

The Jets had two wins against the Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots. Those teams have a combined record of 2-8.

The Jets were outgained in the Titans game by 35 total yards and surrendered 130 rushing yards. They won not because of Rodgers’ performance (176 yards, two TDs) but because of Tennessee QB Will Levis’ turnovers.

A crucial play occurred when Levis attempted an ill-advised backward shovel pass recovered by the Jets. The Jets scored 14 points off the two Levis turnovers and still only won the game 24-17.

In Week 3, New York finally broke through, beating a brutal New England Patriots team 24-3. But then came Week 4, where the Denver Broncos sacked Rodgers five times. The Jets’ offense couldn’t cross the goal line and lost the game 10-9 despite limiting Denver QB Bo Nix to 60 passing yards.

Now they face a Minnesota Vikings defense that’s sacked the QB 17 times through four games.

Is Minnesota Due for a Regression?

The Vikings are one of two remaining undefeated NFL teams (the other is the Kansas City Chiefs). Yet, the Brian Flores defense showed signs of regression in Week 4. They surrendered 22 fourth-quarter points to the Green Bay Packers, holding on to win the game 31-29.

Packers QB Jordan Love threw three picks but also threw four TD passes, three of them in that fourth-quarter frenzy. The Vikings surrender an average of 274.4 passing yards per game.

One concern for the Vikings is the age of their defense. Their cornerback duo of Shaq Griffen and Stephon Gilmore are 29 and 34 respectively. Starting safety Harrison Smith is 35.

The Vikings’ aging secondary will affect their defensive dominance as the season progresses.

Week 5 NFL Odds: Take the Jets

DraftKings Sportsbook opened this line at 2.5. By Tuesday, it swelled to the key number of 3, but the betting public bought the Jets at that number, moving the line back down to 2.

I’m buying the Jets here at +2.5. The Jets defense is still good, limiting opponents to 256.5 yards per game. They’re also excellent against the pass, surrendering only 128 passing yards per game.

While the combination of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison will test the New York secondary, Aaron Rodgers should be able to do enough against an aging Minnesota secondary.
