Pittsburgh Penguins, Brock McGinn fight vs. Travis Hamonic, Ottawa Senators

It has been more than three years since Pittsburgh Penguins winger Brock McGinn dropped the gloves. That streak ended Friday after he hit Erik Brannstrom behind the Ottawa Senators’ net, and the festivities began.

Ottawa defenseman Travis Hamonic immediately took McGinn to task, and the pair threw down in an energetic fight that got the PPG Paints Arena crowd and the benches into it.

According to HockeyFights.com, that was McGinn’s first fight since Nov. 11, 2019, against Ottawa’s Bobby Ryan, and just his fifth career fight.

Brock McGinn may have lost the fight on points, but he stayed in the game after his five-minute fighting major, unlike Hamonic. Officials gave Hamonic a two-minute instigator penalty, five for fighting, and a 10-minute misconduct.

Rickard Rakell buried Jeff Petry’s rebound on the resulting power play for a 1-0 Pittsburgh Penguins lead. The Penguins led 2-0 after the first period, and Ottawa played with just five defensemen.

Ottawa beat the Penguins 5-4 in OT on the front end of the home-and-home series, which began on Wednesday at the Canadian Tire Centre. The Penguins took nine penalties and yielded four goals in that game.
