Dan’s Daily: Penguins Options; Ba-Bye Capitals; Toronto Blow Up?

The Stanley Cup Playoffs reveal strength, and the 2025 version has eliminated all underdogs and inexperienced teams. The Carolina Hurricanes survived a subpar game before handing the Washington Capitals luggage and plane tickets home, but the Winnipeg Jets survived the Dallas Stars by playing one of their best games of the postseason. Speculation is rampant that sweeping and big-name changes will come to the Toronto Maple Leafs if they lose out to the Florida Panthers. Finally, we broke the seal on looking at what the Penguins have available for next season’s lineup and if some of the players acquired are worthy of spots.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you all. I’ve long joked that I could retire early if I just did these Daily’s every day. You grace us with continued visits and participation. The Live Chat video has over 1000 views again this week. I’ll keep doing them if you keep showing up.
I do want to share a cautionary note with you. This week, one of our original subscribers unsubbed. He was kind enough to send a complimentary note of encouragement, but also frustration with the tenor and tone of the Penguins fanbase at large. He was stepping away from following the team because “I can’t deal with it anymore.”
To his point, I’ve noticed that even our comments section has become a dark place some days, with the same comments over and over (sometimes despite the reporting of the article), attacks, and negativity. To be clear, the Penguins are going to stink for a minute. My job is to act like headlights for a few months to show where things are going. If you’ll let me, I’ll download everything I’ve learned in 20+ years around and inside this game.
Or you can shake your fist as if I’m part of some larger media conspiracy with an agenda to protect the big hockey industrial complex by lying and covering up the real truths they don’t want you to know. Either way, finding your own joy in the coming process will be paramount to surviving it.
It could be worse. You could be Sabres fans, eh?
To the hockey…
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Let’s have a little fun. Team Canada steamrolled poor Team Austria at the Worlds, but Sidney Crosby had a goal, and the handshake line was funny as Austrian players wanted their moment with Sid. We’ve got the videos–Fun moments at the Worlds with Sidney Crosby.
Team Canada won’t lose a game in the Worlds. I wonder if people at large realize how much Crosby is doing for Hockey Canada? Star players rarely go to the Worlds, but this Team Canada is almost an Olympic roster, in part because of Crosby. That’s an important thing, especially in the wake of the trial in London.
Let’s dive into the Penguins’ rebuild. The top-six lineup spots are set for next season, but there’s a gaggle of players for third and fourth line duty; the players picked up in the rebuilding trades, prospects, and hockey trades. There are two forgotten options, but are they good enough for the Penguins lineup?
That’s a foundational column. We’ll get laser-focused next week.
Steelers Now: Let’s talk about Will Howard, the rookie QB drafted in the sixth round from Ohio State. Sorry, THE Ohio State. He’s got an adjustment ahead to Arthur Smith and the Steelers offense.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now: The Pirates have the sixth overall pick in this summer’s MLB Draft. Danny Demilio starts looking at the prospects at the top of the draft and who could be the next sacrificial lamb Pirates prospect.
WPXI: I’d also like to credit the Sports and Exhibition Authority for their report on the Pirates’ bungling of the memorial bricks. Their investigation showed the Pirates were given an opportunity to save the bricks, but…didn’t.
Such an inept organization. Truly staggering incompetence at the top. For a second movie quote, in the immortal words of The Bobs, “What is it you say you do here?”
NHL Rumors, News, & National Hockey Now
TSN: We’ll start with the 2018 Team Canada sexual assault trial in London. The Crown (the prosecution) produced the text chat amongst several players. It was a big moment, but (in my opinion) it didn’t do the prosecution any favors as the texts allowed the defendants to essentially testify without testifying.
I deleted a couple of comments on the matter yesterday. Reminder to keep your language and responses suitable for public consumption.
NHL.com: Goodbye, Capitals. They had a plucky season that defied expectations. In the end, Carolina’s relentless, RELENTLESS puck pressure and solid goaltending were too much, and it was over in Game 5.
When I talk to the Penguins about playing Carolina, I usually get a visceral reaction. It’s not fun. They’re not a heavy team, but they are always in your face. No room to play in October or May.
Sportsnet: The Winnipeg Jets survived their Game 5 against Dallas by playing a precise and energetic game. And Connor Hellebuyck looked like a pretty good goalie, too. Here’s how Winnipeg did it.
Vegas Hockey Now: The post-mortems are beginning as the Edmonton Oilers basically stuffed the VGK in the trunk of a Cadillac, drove them to Lake Mead, and dumped the body, Bugsy style. Hannah Kirkell has the four big reasons it is OVER for the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Athletic ($): The nuclear football has been presented, codes entered, and the fans have their finger on the button to launch both Fat Man and Little Boy. Perhaps the organization is also getting ready to blow it up if the Maple Leafs again fail to advance past Round Two.
Toronto Sun: Former NHL’er Rick Vaive had to get a few things off his chest. He wrote that it’s time for Mitch Marner to go–the Maple Leafs should easily say goodbye.
Colorado Hockey Now: The Penguins wouldn’t mind if he stays out West, but the Colorado Avalanche are debating the future of Brock Nelson. Should they keep him or let him walk? The rocky offseason begins for the Avalanche.
I admit I get sucked in by the negativity from society in general. But it takes as much effort to be negative as it does positive. We all need to choose positive a little more often.
I wonder if Mitch Mariner is the next Phil — if he leaves the glare of Toronto and goes to a team with some potential, he may be better off. Not sure which team that is — maybe Utah, New Jersey, Columbus…
Good point. He may need a change of scene to go all the way. I wonder if a team like WSH would take a run at signing Marner, make cap space for him.
They didn’t draft Staal, Letang, Fleury, Malkin, and Crosby by winning playoff games. When I started following them, they got oart of thier starting lineup off of the waiver draft. Fans are spoiled. It eill take time, great decisions, and luck.
Dan, I highly recommend you switch to the CBC reporting on the trial. If you read those recaps vs. the ones Rick Westhead puts out, they’re on another planet. Rick’s “reporting” (and I use that term generously) is very slanted towards the prosecution and leaves out a lot of details that help the defense. If people only read that, they’re going to be extremely surprised when these guys are acquitted. That being said, I wish the CBC had a landing page or recap of all their overall reporting so you don’t have to go on a crusade around the site… Read more »
And just like that, the jury has been dismissed and the case will be decided by judge alone. It think this may set some precedents.
I think Rick’s reporting has been fine–actually, his last few reports have been quite favorable to the defense, but if I’m being bluntly honest, I do fear appearing to lean that way because of the subject matter.
I am too addicted to unsubscribe! Trying to keep constant comments section negativity in check is impossible. Some people are just miserable. There is nothing that can fix that. It is the internet. I just stay out of the comments section when I cannot take anymore. You do a pretty decent job of balancing your articles in the offseason. During the season, you can sometimes get swept under the sea of negativity when the penguins are really bad, but that is understandable.
Totally agree. All you gotta do is scroll on. Like I do each day when I see nouns like Steelers and Pirates. Or bot accounts that make it through. It’s not terribly difficult to keep scrolling. Shrug.
Thanks, Robert. It is tough when the only analysis is negative–it can seem like I’m swept up in it, but I also know people don’t read old-school feature stories (they’re also boring as hell to write), and I can’t be a cheerleader. That’s why I got salty when Sullivan rejected a couple of positive leaning questions later in the season.
I’m not a hockey X’s and O’s expert but there is something about the Canes play (they’re relentless). Their style is tough to compete against, but is grinding it out, without real star power enough to take the Cup? Guentzel and Rantanen didn’t seem to care to stay long-term. I just don’t see them winning the whole thing. Yesterday, I altered my bracket to have Stars v. Canes, but I can’t say they’ll have an easy time getting by, presumably, the Panthers.
In a copycat league, I’m surprised other teams don’t play like Carolina. It takes 100% commitment from every player to do it, and I’m sure that doesn’t sit well with creative guys who want some flexibility – like Rantanen. But the style can work as they’ve shown. Can Hellebuyck win a road game in the playoffs? That is the million dollar question for the Jets. His home vs. road record and stats are unbelievable. They won the President’s trophy and had home ice, but when Dallas beat them in Winnipeg, it upset the apple cart. I think all the pressure… Read more »
Dan, 1.) from the perspective of one past the 3/4 century mark I think you do a remarkable job both substantively in being informative and defensively in fending off a remarkable amount of the “nonsense” directed your way. Who knew you were an integral member of a grand conspiracy to achieve…what exactly no one ever defines. 2.) Sidney Crosby is largely underrated locally. He’s human and often makes bad plays among the thousands he makes during a season but his greatness not only as a player, but as a representative of our city and the franchise will likely not be… Read more »
I couldn’t take watching that Canes and Craps series. So grinding, slow or just boring….I start flipping the channels then it seemed just when I clicked back the Craps would score….agh…. Im sooooo happy the Canes won,,I really hate the Craps and listening to the announcers slobber over Ovenchicken and Tommy boy makes me sick. Glad their out, so glad
Right on Dan. It could be way, way worse. Fellow pens fans, please appreciate what we were able to witness for the last decade and a half. There are dark days ahead but after that, maybe there’s another sid or Mario waiting at the end of our journey. Band wagon fans will start dropping off over the next few years. No worries. Cheaper tickets is our reward!
Yes it would help if the same people don’t make the same comments that this player needs to be trade, Sully stinks, this guy stinks while the article is about something totally different.
Dan could be talking about players pets and the same people will say he doesn’t have a dog. He sucks, trade him…
Dan- your thoughts, do you think the Leafs trade their captain? Not saying they would, but curious what return could they get for him if the pens were an option. I could be wrong but McGrudy, Owen and 1st rounder? Would it take more and if so would you pull the trigger?
Time to keep an eye on Mitch Love and see if the penguins tried to aggressively pursue him now that the Washington Capitals have been eliminated for the playoffs
Maybe that’s the game plan the pens need to do is RELENTLESS puck pursuit. The cane’s got it down pat!!
Carolina also has the personnel to play that kind of style the Penguins do not.
They would have to get the right personality to play that kind of style and right now they don’t have it.
That would require the slower, footed folks on the team to be replaced by true energy players, kinda like Dewar-but you need more than 1.
So so happy the Canes won. Now the league can stop pushing extra hard for Ovi in the playoffs. Mind you, the greatest goal scorer ever scored 1 goal on a gifted 5 on 3 this series. The GR8 Chase was fun, but it overshadowed the rest of the league, covered up the Capitals major flaws, and I would take Sid 100/100 times over Ovi as my captain
Aaron,
not only would you and I take Sid 100/100 times as our captain; there is no facet of the game from scanning ticket stubs to driving the Zamboni to distributing fresh towels not to mention actually playing hockey outside of a 10’ radius wherein we would not take Sid over the Mannequin on Ice 🧊 ! I’m not sure Ovi has been observed skating behind his own goal other than during warm ups. He’s hockey’s DH without having to run the bases.
Much, not all, of the negativity over the past few years was deserved. Yes, Rutherford mortgaged the future in a win-now mode that we have been paying for, and Hextall-Burke exacerbated problems with roster construction. Lackadaisical play can to some extent be put on the coach, but ultimately these players are highly compensated professionals who should have it within themselves to be competitive. Far too often Sid had to carry the team on his back. The slate is nearly wiped clean and WBS players who jelled in the AHL are now moving up, with the hope of a new team… Read more »
Dan, your work is a welcomed reprieve from the grind of life. There is a reason that sports are classified as entertainment. Thanks again and keep it up!
Appreciate your calling out the negativity and attempting to keep lunacy aside. We’re all here because we love the Pens and appreciate your work.
