Dan’s Daily: Kessel on Trade Block Again, Lightning Going for the Cup

Phil Kessel NHL trade rumors, Pittsburgh Penguins trade

Well, well, well. The Tampa Bay Lightning are headed to their second Stanley Cup Final in the last six years, our old friend Phil Kessel could have a new address next season as his name as hit the NHL trade rumors, can the Pittsburgh Penguins get better by trading Kris Letang and the TSN trade bait list is up.

Can the Pittsburgh Penguins trade Kris Letang AND get better? (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

So, Phil Kessel may last only one year in the desert. Here comes criticism: If Kessel took care of himself, if he worked at his craft as hard as he avoids contact, he would be a Hall of Fame player. He has all of the talent in the world, but he chooses an alternative path.

Kessel will be difficult if not impossible to trade. He made the Penguins trade very difficult, and he just completed a 38-point season. Also, Arizona is behind on its arena payments, so the team must cut salary. Here is the TSN trade bait list, and the scoop on the two-time Stanley Cup champion (TSN)

By the way, Brandon Sutter is also on the list, and Penguins GM Jim Rutherford has always been a fan.

Elliotte Friedman says he wouldn’t be surprised to see a Tristan Jarry/ Marc-Andre Fleury tandem in Pittsburgh. It was part of his 31 Thoughts (Sportsnet)

We’ve been digging on that story. As soon as we have something, either way, we’ll shout.

The Vegas Golden Knights had silver aspirations but couldn’t find the fault in our Stars. All puns intended. However, here are the three VGK players who stepped up in the NHL playoffs (Vegas Hockey Now)

He is going to be 36 with diminishing skills and a chunky contract. Second . . . any return would HAVE to include a substantial piece of his remaining contract assumed by Vegas. To me that means something approaching $5 million plus I would hope anything going back to Vegas is at best a token (that part makes me very nervous). Third… Read more »

I thought I read somewhere that a team can only retain up to half of the salary in a trade? Maybe Dan can clear this up? But yeah, love MAF but its probably not in the team’s best interest.

Excellent comment. My thoughts exactly. But this ownership is allowing GMJR to do what he thinks is best. I fear if he can he will keep Conor (Howdy Doody) Sheary, Domineeeek Seeeemone, , and re-acquire Fleury and Daley and worst of all because the market for Murray is understandably weak trade away Jarry. Those are my worst fears.

I don’t think that GMJR will trade away Jarry, he is our upcoming ‘all star’ goaltender with something to prove. He is our new #1. I would be shocked for that not to be the case somehow next year. Dominik Simon digs out pucks, maintains possession and is good at getting them to the finishers. Conor Sheary plays with a lot of flash. He’s good at positioning when it comes to making plays and he’s a decent finisher. He was also very noticeable in the playoffs unlike many others on the team. McCann for me is the player in need… Read more »
