It was a busy night for the TSN news desk. Around midnight local time, the Edmonton Oilers fired GM Peter Chiarelli. TSN insiders also dropped a couple of juicy tidbits for Pittsburgh Penguins fans regarding Derick Brassard.

On the weekly TSN Insider Trading segment, Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun reported Pittsburgh Penguins trade talks centering on Derick Brassard have included the Winnipeg Jets and surprisingly the Carolina Hurricanes.

According to LeBrun, the Penguins have engaged in talks with Carolina Hurricanes and one possibility for the Penguins to acquire Michael Ferland is sending Derick Brassard to Carolina. LeBrun said there are a lot of “interesting” talks (TSN)

Dreger said the Winnipeg Jets remain interested in Brassard.

The LeBrun scenario is wild, to say the least, and doesn’t seem to make much sense unless the Penguins offered Carolina additional assets–which would make Brassard’s long term cost to the Penguins ridiculously high.

As Ryan Rishaug of TSN’s Edmonton bureau broke the news late Tuesday the Edmonton Oilers have fired GM Peter Chiarelli–he gets the link. Here’s the full story. Craziness in Edmonton (TSN)

Also in Edmonton, Jim Matheson wrote about trading Cam Talbot but also proffered some goaltenders for the Oilers to consider, including Tristan Jarry (Edmonton Sun)

Former Penguin defenseman Cameron Gaunce had his Stanley Cup rings stolen. Pittsburgh Hockey Now spoke with Gaunce yesterday and got the full story (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

I missed this story a few days ago. It appears Niklas Kronwall is ready to hang up his skates. Penguins fans may remember the Kronwall missile attacks of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final–which the NHL eventually began defining as an interference minor–but he’s had a stellar career. There is also talk he could be traded if he chooses to make one final Cup run (Detroit News)
