TORONTO — Pittsburgh Penguins depth forward Sam Lafferty made his playoff debut Wednesday night in Game 3 of the Penguins Qualifying Round series against the Montreal Canadiens. Penguins third line center Jared McCann was scratched.

Sullivan wasn’t asked nor did he volunteer that a change could be made during his morning press availability.

Lafferty, 25, made his NHL debut this season. The Hollidaysburg, PA native wasn’t expected to stick around, but played 50 games and scored 13 points, including six goals.

Lafferty is a second-year pro from Brown University. He largely played on the wings as needed, but is a natural center. Wednesday night, Lafferty centered Patrick Marleau and Patric Hornqvist.

Coaches dropped McCann’s ice time in the playoffs as his line was frequently on the defensive.  The forward tied his career-high with 35 points this season including 14 goals.
