Dan’s Daily: Latest Trade Rumors; Team Canada Trends; MORE Penguins Changes
NEW YORK — The Pittsburgh Penguins made more changes, and a newbie will get a good audition for a bigger role while injured players are close enough to be on the three-game road trip. The Seattle Kraken are the latest team to enter the NHL trade chat, Tyler Johnson finally signed a contract, David Pastrnak faced the media after his benching, the Philadelphia Flyers completed an early-season minor swap, the New Jersey Devils got a gem of a goaltending performance in shutting out the Edmonton Oilers, and the NHL named Sidney Crosby the third star of the week.
It is a good day. The election ads will stop. There was a parking space at the Pgh International Airport. Spirit Airlines got me to LaGaurdia 30 minutes early. But I do feel compelled to tell you something–I don’t care how you voted, which tribe you march with, or if you march independently. Tonight or tomorrow, one of those two candidates will be the President-Elect of the United States, which means tens of millions of your friends and neighbors voted for them. Good people weighed the options and chose for themselves. They’re not stupid.
We need to stop this horse-apples tactic of declaring the country over if the other person wins. Short rant over. I’m here for hockey and a respite from the above.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Cody Glass, you’re up! Penguins coach Mike Sullivan again put his lines in a blender, and there are only so many times I can quote Eve 6’s Inside Out, and it still be cute. I think Sullivan is making a mistake with Noel Acciari, but we had a chat with both Glass and “Cookie,” and we got injury updates. Here’s the 411 from Penguins practice.
So, the Penguins are fighting back against the ugly slide that hit its zenith out west. Here are three thoughts on the goaltending situation, the fight against their worst angels, and the Sullivan surprise in the Penguins blog.
Steelers Now: Cam Sutton is back from his eight-game suspension, but what is his role? Umm? It’s the mystery on the South Side for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Oh, I hesitate even to put this here. Our Pirates guys work so hard, and they are so undermined by the Barnum & Bailey act they cover. But here goes–make sure to keep checking out the best baseball coverage in Pittsburgh. Three free agents to watch for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now
DFO Rundown Podcast: Brandon Tanev and Yanni Gourge will be on the NHL trade block in the next couple of weeks. Frank Seravalli drops the latest NHL trade chatter involving the former Penguins winger.
Boston Hockey Now: “I’ve got to be better.” David Pastrnak owned his brutal turnover and the subsequent benching by coach Jim Montgomery. Things are a bit tense even as players take responsibility for the Boston Bruins.
Tyler Johnson made a choice—or did the Bruins? Either way, Johnson has been waiting for a contract since the start of free agency, and he finally inked one with the Bruins on Monday. Here are his Bruins contract details.
Philly Hockey Now: It’s technically a minor swap, but it’s also a white flag for a former top Flyers defenseman prospect. An early season trade might bring new life to a couple of players, and here are the Oilers-Flyers trade details.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Speaking of those Oilers, they were pretty good in New Jersey last night, but Jake Allen was better. The backup ‘tendy was spectacular and stole a 3-0 shutout for the New Jersey Devils.
Sportsnet: If only people cared as much about Team USA, eh? We’re taking a stock report. Who is trending up, and who is down for Team Canada at the Four Nations Face-Off?
Get some coffee. Enjoy the game. It’s going to be a long night.
Others have said this before, no dissemination of political messages/advertisements via electronic or mailing systems until the Tuesday after Labor Day Weekend (US). In person rallies, events and interviews/podcasts are fine prior. Nice to dream. I agree with Acciari being the most disruptive to opponents on the wing. I think we have a great 1st line, and good 3rd/4th lines, but it’s the second line that will need some attention. Maybe the players exist internally, but it would seem that the addition of a scoring threat would really give this team a competitive advantage.
