Dan’s Daily: Low Grade for Penguins LWs, Huberdeau gets PAID

Published

on

NHL trade, Jonathan Huberdeau, Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins

It’s August, and we’re still chugging along. Despite the pandemic, travel, illness, and sometimes boredom, Pittsburgh Hockey Now has published fresh content every day since April 21, 2019 — that was the last time we didn’t publish a new story. In the Daily, the Pittsburgh Penguins LWs graded near the bottom of the league on the TSN board. The Penguins should quickly sign one of their 2023 UFAs before the price increases. Sportsnet analyzed the recent salary dumps on the NHL trade market, including the Penguins trade for Ty Smith, and the Calgary Flames bellied up to the bar and dumped the cash on Jonathan Huberdeau.

I suppose that after losing Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, Calgary GM Brad Treliving wasn’t going to waste time, nor was he going to lowball. When someone offers you $84 million…you take it (hint, hint, investors).

Pittsburgh Penguins / Sports Now Group PGH

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Tristan Jarry will be a UFA next summer. GM Ron Hextall can’t let that happen. With Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang locked down, the Penguins can’t afford a bad year because of a stopgap goalie. Lockdown Jarry, too. Pittsburgh Penguins analysis.

Here we go Steelers!

SteelersNow.com: The story of Week 2 has been Diontae Johnson’s contract and the young QB firing the ball to him. Camp takeaways–Kenny Picket was spectacular on Thursday. Pittsburgh Steelers camp coverage.

Steelers practice — Cam Sutton left, Minkah Fitzpatrick came back, Diontae Johnson wants to retire a Steeler — so much content. Pittsburgh Steelers news.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: The daily prospect watch. The Indianapolis Indians struck out 15 hitters, and Osvaldo Bido whiffed eight of them in three innings. Dariel Lopez impressed, too. Pittsburgh Pirates prospects.

PBN+:  The Pirates swept the Brewers! And you get all three sites for one price — If you’re a PHN subscriber and haven’t activated your code (a few hundred of you), it’s free! John Perrotto writes that errors aside, Ke’Bryan Hayes shows his defensive value. Pittsburgh Pirates analysis.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Calgary Hockey Now: Show me the money. Eight years. $84 million. Bam! Jonathan Huberdeau got the biggest contract in Calgary Flames history.

Edmonton Journal: Staying in Alberta, the Oilers gave Kailer Yamamoto a two-year deal similar to the Pittsburgh Penguins dish to Kasperi Kapanen. Like the Penguins, it put the Oilers over the salary cap. So, the Oilers are on the clock for a trade — NHL trade talk.

TSN: The analytics and hockey folks have analyzed the positional depth of all 32 teams. The Penguins scored well at RW, but at LW? Yeah … not so good. Ranking LWs.

Sportsnet: There have been quite a few salary dumps on the NHL trade market this summer. Sportsnet analyzed the biggest ones, including the Penguins trade of John Marino to New Jersey.

Detroit Hockey Now: Tank for Bedard. That’s the slogan in fanbases across the NHL. As Kevin Allen writes — Bedard plays a lot like a Red Wings great and Hockey Hall of Famer. Is another Steve Yzerman coming to the NHL?

Boston Hockey Now: Jimmy Murphy published dueling columns. He’s been covering the Boston Bruins for us for three years and the second chair on the Canadiens beat since January. He was a lifesaver when our Canadian operations did a faceplant. On the anniversary of his father’s passing, Jimmy explained what it is like covering both sides of one of hockey’s most heated rivalries. Boston Bruins coverage.

The plan is to have Jimmy return to full-time Bruins coverage and national columns this season.

The season can’t get here fast enough!

I’m still not a full Jarry fan maybe it’s because his playoff game is still suspect but then again who would be his replacement. I’d make some of the new goalies battle Desmith for his job and hopefully find a diamond in the group.

I think the wild card is Tokarski. He had many brilliant moments in Buffalo that earned him the starting position for a while (when Ullmark was injured). He also had rough times. Maybe with better coaching and better defense in front of him?

It’s not Jarry that’s suspect, it’s Sullivan because he won’t get (or keep) a player like Ryan Reaves who is able to keep our good players on the ice for a whole game (when we’re playing a desperate, dirty team like New York Rangers). Don’t blame the goalie!

No kidding, everyone is quick to forget how teams beat the Pens in the first round the last couple of years..the beat downs are embarrassing. Jake almost got killed against the Rangers.

Lucky you wasn’t blocked. Have you seen these Yinzers your talking to or at the games? Thank God for Steelers starting. Just sit back and watch. History always repeats itself. Just watch and at least Steelers are playing.

Huberdeau should be sending a case of champagne to Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Those two departures did more for his income than his agent could ever hope to deliver. He is a solid wing, no doubt, but $84 million seems a bit “enthusiastic” on the part of the Flames. He has no alternative but to have nothing less than another 100 point season. If I am Jake Guentzel I am definitely “smiling like a butcher’s dog” this morning.

Huberdeau should be happy to have all that money, but should also be happy to not have his name on the Stanley Cup unless he wins it this season. New contract pays him $500,000 to much to play for a Cup winner.

I am on the fence with Jarry myself-until I see a solid post season effort-win or lose. Yes, he has been good for the regular season but. I am still hestitant to lock him up because I dont see him here beyond 3-4 years unless they sign him long term.

Jarry and DeSmith are such an underrated goalie tandem. Until either of them gets into more playoff starts it will be hard to adequately judge them. People forget that Jarry’s playoff flop was his first playoff stint. Unless your name is Patrick Roy, you aren’t going to go all the way in your first playoff appearance. As far as regular season goes, i am super comfortable with the goalies we have.

I see a lot of posted negatives for anyone stating the obvious about Jarry and the playoffs. Please tell me why it’s wrong or negative to state the obvious.

How is stating the obvious “pooping on players all day”? It’s not pooping if you say what really happened in the playoffs. I’m not saying he has a crap glove hand or can’t stop a beach ball. I’m hoping he is awesome in the playoffs…….but what if he lays an another egg in the playoffs will everyone giving negatives all the sudden say why did the Pens give him such a quick contract???? Honestly I’m not a Jarry hater

“Stating the obvious” isn’t necessary. It was 2 years ago and his first playoff appearance. The whole point of the Jarry article was to point out that he is really the best option they will have at goaltender next summer so it will be best to lock him up now. They don’t have to sign him to an 8 year 56 million contract if they can do it now. Wait and He has another all star season and they may have to or he could go elsewhere and get that much. Dwelling on the past doesn’t help the future.

“Stating the obvious isn’t necessary”….. Interesting…
Okay I’ll play along…..Jarry is an all-star and his regular season play well dominant some how in the playoffs so hurry up and sign him, sign him, sign him, don’t wait SIGN HIM!!!
Anyone who disagrees or thinks the Pens should wait and see how this season goes is nuts..Sign him NOW.

Do you read anything?

Who is your goaltender if they wait and he goes?

And no, i don’t think that you are “nuts” for wanting to wait until after next season and see what happens but that could prove to be very costly. Dan outlined it in the article nicely. There aren’t any better options available in free agency next summer to replace Jarry. MAYBE the Penguins could make a trade to replace him, but do they have the pieces to acquire someone better? Probably not. That leaves the current penguins depth chart to replace Jarry if he bolts for more money. DeSmith is serviceable but the rest of the depth chart consists of… Read more »
