2021 NHL Expansion Draft

Updated: Penguins Lose Tanev; Kraken Go Young & Cheap

on

Pittsburgh Penguins Brandon Tanev

The picks are official, but nearly all Seattle Kraken expansion draft picks were leaked via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Former TSN reporter turned Daily Faceoff lead Frank Seravalli did most of the damage to the Wednesday night ESPN broadcast. The usual suspects from TSN and Sportsnet did some heavy lifting, too, and the Pittsburgh Penguins lost winger Brandon Tanev.

The expansion draft essentially cost the Penguins Tanev and Jared McCann, whom they traded on Saturday to avoid losing him for nothing.

Seattle had its choice of Tanev, Marcus Pettersson, Jason Zucker, and Zach Aston-Reese. As you see below, Seattle GM Ron Francis shied away from higher-priced veterans and steered towards unknowns and players who needed a break. Morgan Geekie, Gavin Bayreuther, and Carsen Twarnyski from the Metro Division should provide enough evidence of that.

Tanev’s departure frees up $3.5 million of salary-cap space. This week, the Penguins cleared nearly $6.5 million by trading McCann to Toronto–who was then selected by Seattle. Thus Toronto protected Alex Kerfoot and their roster by trading prospect Filip Hallander and a seventh-rounder.

The Penguins also have two new holes in their lineup, including a middle-six LW, replacing Tanev on their defensive line with Zach Aston-Reese and Teddy Blueger.

Did GM Ron Hextall outthink himself?

In a preview of the coming Pittsburgh Penguins analysis, the Penguins grind line fared slightly better with Teddy Blueger and Zach Aston-Reese than Tanev and Blueger. The baseline stats show similar Corsi (about 45% each), but the Aston-Reese pairing had a 45% goals-for rate compared to 28% and a 48-43 advantage with expected goals-for.

The Seattle Kraken total payroll of just under $53 million, leaving Seattle about $28 million for the free agent and NHL trade markets.

Seattle made several side deals, though we’re not sure how many. In an inexplicable decision, the NHL chose not to announce the side-deals during the expansion draft broadcast. They will be revealed today at 1 p.m. EST unless Seravalli and crew leak them first.

The Pens should have left Jeff Carter unprotected. I still doubt the Kracken would have picked him up with a year left on his contract and his bring 36. Tanev was the heart and soul of the Penguins. He gave it his all. You can’t find too many players with that kind of heart. He is also extremely fast. I think they just slowed down the team with the loss of McCann and Tanev.

I get it. We fans love Tanev, but the reality is that the team lost in the first round since he has been here. Tanev was the heart and soul of a team that needed changes, and the Pens’ speed got beaten to a pulp the last 3 postseasons. Maybe they can replace Tanev and McCann with players who will fit better in the playoffs.

Wait til Zach Aston-Reese is not qualified this week .If he does not sign before qualification are due he won’t be qualified.Hexy is not going to risk an arb hearing or he still could be traded.Still alot of changes coming boys and girls.

This is a horrible take. ZAR has had some of the best defensive metrics over the past couple of seasons. I’m guessing you’re probably one of those fans that doesn’t really understand the game and thinks that if a player doesn’t score a lot of goals then they’re terrible.

Not terrible at all–he plays in the NHL. Just needs a bit more offensive prowess. It is the injury bug that worries me!

Tanev should never have been exposed

Honestly who wants Zucker or Pettersson? Francis isn’t blind. Wait till you see the year Sprong has in Washington this year. Enjoy Pettersson . He sucks .

I can’t believe he was exposed either! As the one poster said above he was the heart and soul of the team and frankly, one of only maybe three ppl that actually would hit someone on this team!

I may be crazy, but I think Sidney Crosby is the heart and soul of this team.

So Tanev is gone, big deal. He was a regular season player and as you have said many, many, many, many times Katz: It’s all about the playoffs. Tanev was part of the last 2 playoff failures: 10 games played, 1 goal, 1 assist, and a minus 4. You should be thrilled he is gone, Penguins need changes for playoff success.

Sorry to lose Tanev — but he was oft injured. More sorry we lost McCann — but since Seattle took him from Toronto, we certainly would have lost him. So in the end, the Pens lost both Tanev and McCann and got very little in return. Maybe they should have kept McCann and when Seattle took him we would still have Tanev.

Another 3.5 out the door, making what 6.4. If they move Zucker and Petterson-could conceivablely do something that no one see’s coming. Which would be surprising to this guide.

So after nearly crucifying Jim for Tanev’s contract and all the “Penguins are ruined” chatter, it’s a player we can’t do without? And Jared, who was a bonus because the trade was aimed at Bjugstad, and he did play above what was expected from him, but not at the level this trade was hoping to achieve for the Pens, is a great loss? Maybe I’ll believe it when I wipe out my memory. Everyone is saying Zucker could still bounce back, but I’m 50/50 on that one. Him and Pettersson are better trade chips than Tanev. $3.5 million for a… Read more »

McCann also disappeared in the playoffs. So he is a great regular season player and I thought he had a great year, but would he ever step up in the playoffs? I think he was just a perimeter player that was not tough enough to get to the net in the playoffs? That may be why he was traded to Toronto. GMRH wants to use that 3 million to get a tougher player on the Pen’s 3rd line.

Leaking the pics was wrong. Imagine being a Seattle Kraken fan. Would have been fun to watch. As far as the Pens, Tanev was a a good player, but unless a Superstar can be replaced. Salary dump won’t hurt either. People forget professional sports is a business. He was left exposed?? Injuries, not playing to potential, etc? New management duo in place may have other ways of thinking. More moves to be made yet…

But, Hextall disappointed a lot of fans with this decision. Fans loved Turbo’s play, as did I.
Nothing Teddy and ZAR do will match/replace that.

I like Tanev, and he was fun to watch. But he’s not going to be the key to winning a Cup. And the idea that he’s the “heart and soul” of the team is ludicrous. Fans of other teams must either laugh their heads off or be totally confused by reading comments from some Yinzer fans who will demand that a future Hall of Famer be run out of town and in the next breath be devastated that a speedy fourth liner was the draft pick. And the good news is that it’s more likely that some team will be… Read more »

McCann and Tanev gone and we’re supposed to believe an already flawed team will be better?
