Pittsburgh Penguins star center Evgeni Malkin is taking a two-pronged approach to his age-37 NHL season. On one hand, he has committed himself to enjoying the privilege of playing hockey now and for the next few years as he reaches the twilight of a gangbusters career. On the other hand … well, on the other hand is not a fork full of some sweet delicacy.
That’s because Malkin, in his 18th season, figures he can enjoy hockey in his dotage and still make further sacrifices, doubling down on what he does off the ice to remain at his best.
For instance, as Malkin outlined after practice Monday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, he is focusing more on recovery after practices and games, getting a massage if something hurts.
“I’m eating better now,” he said. “No dessert (often) like before.”
