The Pittsburgh Penguins relaxed a period too soon. They grabbed a 3-1 lead after a sloppy first period, and had a commanding 5-1 lead after the second, but incorrectly thought they would coast to an easy win. Anyone who has watched the Ottawa Senators knows they are a gritty, pesky team.

In the blink of an eye, Ottawa closed to within 5-4 and had a few chances to tie the game. The Penguins perked up with the game on the line but gave up more than 40 shots for the third time in the last four games. They had not given 40 or more shots in any game since the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 6.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a Malkin issue, but it’s not Malkin’s fault. We dissected Tristan’s Jarry’s game, updated the Penguins injuries, and Mike Matheson is finding his stride with a few great games. We break it down from PPG Paints Arena in exactly five minutes.
