Pittsburgh Penguins winger Bryan Rust sat in the locker room last December, seething after the Penguins squandered a chance to beat the Carolina Hurricanes and lost a hotly contested one-goal game.

Carolina won all four games against the Penguins last season, and all four were tight one-goal games with a lot of emotional investment on both sides.

New year, similar result. Carolina got an empty netter for a 4-2 win at PNC Arena on Saturday.

The Penguins needed a solid game to erase the bad taste and bad game Thursday against the New Jersey Devils. With a few lineup tweaks and a genuine effort to remove the ghastly mistakes that plagued them, the Penguins nearly got everything they needed. Coach Mike Sullivan elevated Radim Zohorna to the second line and put Rickard Rakell on the third line with Lars Eller.
