Dan’s Daily: Playing Penguins GM, Why No Hellebuyck Trade?

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Jake Guentzel, Winnipeg Jets

The last pressing matter of the NHL trade season remains the Pittsburgh Penguins, Erik Karlsson, and the San Jose Sharks. With a little help from this reporter, Sheng Peng blew up the internet Wednesday with a trade proposal vetted by an NHL exec and scout as “sensible” and fair. Questions surround why the Winnipeg Jets are still sitting on a couple of blue-chippers on the trade block and if Jonathan Toews is retiring.

A little site news…

If you’re waiting for our new platform with the singular subscription option, it’s in the final stage (again), but the developers are having trouble with just one more website — Pittsburgh. We’ve had so many subscribers on different levels over the last four years that it’s driving them nuts. It could be a few days before we make a big announcement or another month. I’ve come to really hate this project.

We can’t do an app until this gets settled. The Big Dig in Boston has nothing on this.

Now to the hockey…

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates:

San Jose Hockey Now: I posted this in the Daily yesterday, but only later in the day. If you read the Daily in the morning, you missed this bit of awesomeness. An NHL executive called it fair, as did an NHL scout who vetted the deal. Sheng Peng picked my brain as he put together a pretty good Penguins offer for Erik Karlsson.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: If we put the Penguins’ situation on the table and dissect it, any trade for Karlsson must include Jeff Petry. That little nugget, some inside dirt or anti-dirt on the talks, and more Penguins one-timers.

Steelers Now:

Here is the 2023 Hall of Honor and Steelers alumni weekend dates.

Here’s a little catharsis: An NFL analyst burned Matt Canada.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

John Perrotto writes there’s no more two-way play for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first-overall pick, Paul Skenes.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

Winnipeg Sun: Why haven’t the Winnipeg Jets moved Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele? A little stick tap to our buddy Spector’s Hockey for finding this first. What is the hold-up?

Chicago Hockey Now: There’s some evidence it’s over. Is Jonathan Toews retiring?

Boston Hockey Now: The Bruins’ offseason is sure to be debated. Now they’ve signed former Devils forward Jesper Boqvist.

Montreal Hockey Now: GM Kent Hughes is using his experience wisely for the Montreal Canadiens.

Florida Hockey Now: Here’s some good news — Spencer Knight is back on the ice for the Florida Panthers.

Buffalo Hockey Now: K’Andre Miller signed a two-year deal with the Rangers, and that could be a roadmap for Owen Power and the Buffalo Sabres.

Colorado Hockey Now: Ryan Johansen as a proper 2C? Can Alex Georgiev repeat his regular season? The changes and challenges for the Colorado Avalanche.

Sportsnet: I also found this interesting. Sportsnet ranked the top five landing spots for Erik Karlsson. Until the impasse with the top-two teams ends, the NHL trade rumors will keep spinning.
