Dan’s Daily: Jeff Carter Gets Gummy Gift, Eichel Trade Roller Coaster

I don’t think two stories could be so inherently different yet occupy the same headline space. Jack Eichel–and it seems odd to refer to him as a Buffalo Sabre–is on the NHL trade roller coaster. Things are up one second and down the next, at lightning speed. It is serious business. On the other side, we have Pittsburgh Penguins Jeff Carter and his lifetime supply of candy offer.

The New York Islanders may be in stealth mode on the NHL trade market for a defenseman, too.

Yep, very different stories today. Oh, and there is also hockey. Go figure.

First, the Jeff Carter “news”:

I preferred DOTS and a Snapple as my road strip snack, but fruit snacks are good, too. The Johnstown Chiefs put “DOTS” in the name field on my hockey bag…

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: From one to 400, a Jeff Carter story including his first goal, the Stanley Cup OT winner, and the Stanley Cup winners, and #400.

Get this–ESPN had MASSIVE ratings with the Lightning-Penguins game. Huge.

And the controversial piece. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, but the folks who were upset, boy did I hear about it. The bandwagon fans are leaving the Penguins. Good riddance.

Barstool Sportsbook is here… Tons of promos, offers, and boosts.

Canada Hockey Now

Calgary: Oliver Kylington is a lot like Juuso Riikola. Depth defensemen with the talent to be a regular but have been buried by bad luck, lack of opportunity, and coaches’ decisions. Fan-favorite Kylington is still fighting in Calgary.

Montreal: Smothered by the Buffalo Sabres…BUFFALO?!…Mitch Gallo took the Canadiens to the woodshed. If the Montreal Canadiens are to make the playoffs, they cannot lose to…BUFFALO?!

Toronto: What’s at state this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs? Everything. Everything is at stake.

Vancouver: Our exclusive chat with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. Olympics. COVID. Ovechkin.

NHL Trade Chatter, News & National Hockey Now

TSN Video: Where oh where will the NHL trade winds take Jack Eichel? As I Tweeted on Thursday, there was a buzz behind the scenes…and then, nothing. Pierre LeBrun examined the suitors still in the running and added St. Louis to the mix.

Sportsnet: My favorite story this week. Fighting is on its way out, BUT the pugilists like Zach Kassian don’t care. This is all about NHL fighting and its importance in the game. Loved it.

Boston: PAYDAY! Boston Bruins, meet Charlie McAvoy’s accountant. Charlie, don’t spend the $9.5 million AAV in one place.

Metro Division:

NYI: The New York Islanders got rocked in their season opener against Carolina. It has our NYI folks already worrying about the long-stagnant power play.

The Athletic: Arthur Staples believes Lou Lamoriello is laying in the weeds, hunting for defenseman on the NHL trade market.

Washington: This will make Pittsburgh Penguins fans uneasy. Lapierre-Mania is taking hold in D.C., and the Capitals youth movement is underway.

The Rest:

Florida: The Panthers beat the Penguins on Thursday. It was the season opener for Florida and the rook Anton Lundell impressed more than a few people.

Detroit: Dylan Larkin got the gate for one game. In the process, an injury could keep him out longer. Heaven help the Red Wings.

Saturday is the 75th anniversary of Mr. Gordie Howe’s NHL debut. Wow.

Colorado: Symmetry with the Penguins–Adrian Dater reports that Nathan MacKinnon won’t play Saturday. Valeri Nichushkin is out week-to-week, and the DoPS suspended Gabriel Landeskog for two games. Their top three forwards are OUT.

San Jose: Potential super rookie William Eklund turned 19 and celebrated his birthday at…no joke…IKEA.

Vegas: The Golden Knights are off to a bad start. They also lost defenseman Mark Stone to injury.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now will have more from the Pittsburgh Penguins morning skate, including an update on Bryan Rust.
