GM Ron Hextall has made it clear that the Pittsburgh Penguins want to re-sign Kris Letang.

He’s said it repeatedly.

And, often, emphatically.

That doesn’t mean it will happen — after all, Letang is about to become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team that wants him — but keeping Letang would address one of the Penguins’ major offseason personnel issues.

It would allow their No. 1 defense pairing to remain intact, assuming the coaching staff and front office still view Brian Dumoulin as a capable partner for Letang.

But what if Letang moves on, decides that a contract offer from some other club simply is too lucrative to turn down? Or even that he simply would prefer to continue his career in a different city, despite his insistence that he’d like to return?
