Dan’s Daily: Buyout Clocks Start Ticking, Shopping Penguins Bargains

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL trade talk, Matt Murray Snubs Marc-Andre Fleury

The NHL arbitrations cases are in full swing, and now so are the buyout debates. The most consequential debate is from the Toronto Maple Leafs and their extreme cap overage. Sportsnet also looked at the 2022 goalie carousel and if the horses finished up or down when the music stopped. Tony DeAngelo wasn’t unemployed for long, wonders about the Winnipeg Jets and their lingering NHL trade rumors, what an Erik Karlsson-to-Seattle trade would look like, and we did a little PTO shopping for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

If you’re reading this, I’m quite sure I spent Monday evening as a glitch in the Matrix. Quick recap: I realized on Monday I had time and opportunity to do something crazy. I’ve always wanted to ride the motorcycle on the Tail of the Dragon, a road over the NC/TN border with 318 turns in 11 miles. So, I threw a few things in a backpack and bolted out the door before I could give it a second thought.

The trip to Gatlinburg, TN, should have taken about 9 hours. However, after nine hours, I was still three hours away and got no further than Johnson City. I swear to you, I saw one sign that said “Kingsport 59 miles,” then 10 minutes later, I saw a road sign that read, “Kingsport 59 miles.”

There were a few crazy moments. A late-night tanker truck went full Verstappen through the Kentucky hills. I mean, he was taking the left lanes and then diving into the apexes on the right. You never go full Verstappen, but the driver pulled it off.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Could Kyle Dubas sign another player with whom he had ties in Toronto? Dave Molinari went shopping for PTOs to bring to the Penguins training camp.

Steelers Now:

Ten Things to Watch at Steelers Training Camp.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

Winner winner. Quinn Priester got his first MLB win. Quickie Pirates recap.

Check this out — Jung Ho Kang caught a foul ball during the Pirates game?!

And the Pirates are willing to listen to offers for David Bednar. The Pirates trade chatter is picking up.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

San Jose Hockey Now: Mr. Sheng Peng is at it again. He’s evaluating an Erik Karlsson trade to the Seattle Kraken this time. It’s not a cheap Sharks trade.

The Athletic: Will Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck be on the Winnipeg Jets roster in the fall? The NHL trade chatter has cooled. So what’s up?

Sportsnet: The 10 biggest goalie trades, UFA signings in 2022, and, more importantly, how they worked out.

TSN: An arbitrator awarded Ilya Samsonov $3.5 million. Now the Toronto Maple Leafs are getting worried about how they will shed more than $12 million in salary. They have … pause for dramatic effect … a new buyout window.

Former Penguins goalie Matt Murray seems to be the most talked about buyout candidate.

Boston Hockey Now: It’s a good question. If Samsonov got $3.5 million, what will Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman be awarded?

Philly Hockey Now: Will the Samsonov arbitration award open doors for the Flyers to trade Carter Hart?

Montreal Canadiens: Marc Dumont puts the cards on the table, “What I Got Wrong” about the Montreal Canadiens.

Carolina Hockey Now: Wait, what is this?! A brand new site? Carolina Hockey Now!! Welcome Bryant Baucom to the team. We’ll make the big announcement today on Twitter.

And the Carolina Hurricanes signed Tony DeAngelo.
