Watch PHN Postgame: Penguins Survive Firewagon Hockey vs. FLA, Win SO
There were plenty of defensive breakdowns. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers climbed on the firewagon, but a pair of great goaltending performances pushed the game to a shootout, which the Penguins won 3-2.
The game was the Penguins’ third-straight shootout and first victory in three attempts this season. As Dan detailed, Tristan Jarry has been rough in the shootouts. He stopped just two of his previous seven attempts. But after a few days of work and a little help from defenseman Mike Matheson, Jarry stuffed three of four attempts.
The Penguins were on their heels for much of the game. Jarry made 36 saves on 38 shots. Though the advanced stats from NaturalStatTrick.com don’t show it, Florida had many high-danger chances. Some dogged backchecking, and some careless puck movement by Florida prevented a handful of chances.
The Penguins didn’t hang on to pucks down low, but as Evan Rodrigues said, “We kind of got roped into that game.”
