Dan’s Daily: Flyers are Cursed, Kadri Mic-Drops Avs, Penguins Value Potentials
Say goodbye in style if you are going to war against your former teammates for the prize you just helped them win. Nazem Kadri mic-dropped his former Colorado Avalanche teammates. The Philadelphia Flyers are cursed, and it’s getting worse, writes Sam Carchidi. The Dallas Stars and New York Rangers hooked up on the NHL trade market for a prospect who was done with the Rangers. Sonny Milano is headed to the Calgary Flames as the perfect no-risk, high-reward signing. The Edmonton Oilers signed Jake Virtanen, there are seven prominent unsigned RFAs as camps begin, and we looked at the Pittsburgh Penguins value menu.
So many Penguins-connected stories today! Will Brian Boyle be a Boston Bruins forward soon?
Today is the final day of Penguins prospect camp. At this point, we’ve chatted with the primary folks and even dipped into the secondary level. There’s a not-so-fine line between choosing stories because they are available and choosing stories you want and care to read. I will admit to one prospect totally giving me the cold shoulder and brusque answers, which made me think he would be successful with confidence like that. No, I didn’t write anything negative. Quite the contrary. No, I won’t share who. I can take it.
I’ll do a “stock up, stock down” piece from camp later this morning.
Pittsburgh Penguins / Sports Now Group PGH
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins are adding different types of prospects. Larger. Heavier. Meaner. Sam Poulin and Nathan Legare are changing their identity to fit the pro game. And there are “beefier” Penguins prospects coming.
You can watch Valtteri Puustinen win the camp shootout drill. Penguins camp.
*PHN+: Mid-round picks and UFAs. No pressure, but possible future value. Here are the five possible diamonds in the rough who could be Penguins.
*Steelers Now: Here we go — TONS of Steelers analysis after the gutwrenching loss to the Patriots. START KENNY PICKETT! Just..not yet, says Cale Berger of the Steelers QB situation.
My two cents — You can’t have a QB missing as many open targets downfield as Trubisky. Just can’t. Don’t think Pickett is ready? Start Mason Rudolph. I’m already done with Trubisky. It’s not like he is an unknown quantity or performed better elsewhere. Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate.
I took years of Latin for that quote.
Steelers Now: Stat pack. The offense went conservative. Pickens disappeared (not his fault?). The full Steelers analysis.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now (+): Accountability. Now. Accountability should never go out of style, including for Bob Nutting.
The watch is on — who could be promoted to Triple-A? The Pirates prospects watch.
NHL Trade, News & National Hockey Now:
Philly Hockey Now: Ok, maybe the Flyers won’t stink. Uh oh. Sean Couturier is injured, and it’s not good. Full story — Philadelphia Flyers are cursed.
***Dallas Hockey Now: The Stars paid a premium to the Rangers for 22-year-old defenseman Nils Lundkvist, who basically told the Rangers to pound sand because they wouldn’t give him an NHL shot. So we have a Dallas Stars trade.
Yes, the above is a sneak peek at a big announcement coming as soon as the tech people wave the green flag (this week, I hope).
Sportsnet: The seven unsigned RFAs and the latest news & rumors.
Calgary Hockey Now: Here we go — here’s THE fun story today. Nazem Kadri totally mic-dropped his former teammates in the group chat, then peace out! Here’s the story of Nazem Kadri.
Calgary: Sonny Milano finally, FINALLY, has a new home, and it is with the Calgary Flames.
Colorado Hockey Now: Where does Evan Rodrigues fit with the Avalanche? Here are the projected opening night lines for the Colorado Avalanche.
We also have a lot of E-Rod stuff behind the Colorado paywall. I apologize that our new platform isn’t finished. Soon enough, you’ll be able to read all of the paywall stuff when you subscribe to PHN+. You can also read between the lines that I’m almost seething that things aren’t done yet. April 1 was the initial estimate. My apologies.
Boston: And…the Bruins are waiting for one, just one, PTO for training camp. Could it be…Brian Boyle? Boston Bruins camp awaits.
TSN: The Oilers signed Jake Virtanen to a PTO.
