Dan’s Daily: Canadian Trade Rumors, Penguins Draft Strategy?

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Sam Poulin

Is it a good idea for the Pittsburgh Penguins to trade down at next week’s NHL Draft? The Canadian trade rumors are hot as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames are peddling their wares. The New Jersey Devils have Yegor Sharangovich on the NHL trade block, too. The Washington Capitals have a few free-agent centers to chase, and Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery is taking the blame for his club’s Round One flop against the Florida Panthers.

And things should be back to normal in Vegas, not because of the parade–that will live in hearts and minds for years–but because I finally left. I’m again a full-time Pittsburgh resident after two months of chasing the Vegas Golden Knights around. My first night back was a bit of culture shock. I had time to stop at home, dump my suitcase in the laundry room, change clothes, and head for WXPI to do Final Word. Afterward, nothing was open, and a dude was running around on I-279 without pants.

Welcome back!

But on my final free day in Las Vegas, we hired a new Golden Knights beat writer whom I’m excited about. It took until the final minutes, but we pulled it out. If anyone is headed out to Vegas and needs some tips, I think I’m expert level by now.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates (Sports Now Group):

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I started a trend by pointing out that Kyle Dubas likes to trade down at the NHL Draft. It caught on, and there’s been lots of speculation — Dave Molinari looked at the situation. Is that best for the Penguins’ draft strategy?

Steelers Now:

Keeanu Benton is impressing Steelers coaches.

Omar Khan has had himself quite the offseason. However, there are more needs to be met for the Steelers training camp.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

It’s happening! Sources confirmed to our PBN crew the Pirates are promoting Henry Davis.

Womp womp–six straight losses after the bullpen became an arson. Pittsburgh Pirates lose 5-2 to Milwaukee.

Now, back to the good stuff–what can we expect from Davis? Pirates preview.

NHL Trade Rumors, News & National Hockey Now:

Sportsnet Edmonton: The NHL trade winds are a-blowin’ up north. The Edmonton Oilers are trying to address three key needs.

Things are also getting interesting for Noah Hanafin, Elias Lindholm, and the Calgary Flames.

Toronto Sun: GM Brad Treliving went to Arizona to negotiate with Auston Matthews. Also, could the Toronto Maple Leafs and Hurricanes hook up on a major swap involving one of the TML stars?

New Jersey Hockey Now: In case you missed it over the weekend, New Jersey put Yegor Sharangovich on the NHL trade block.

And GM Tom Fitzgerald is trying to lock up Dawson Mercer.

Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers’ rebuild is actively doing the opposite of the Golden Knights. The Philadelphia Flyers rebuild.

Washington Hockey Now: The Capitals truly need some help down the middle. Four free agent centers for the Washington Capitals.

Detroit Hockey Now: International man of mystery. Top Russian prospect Matvei Michkov snubbed teams after the season and hasn’t spoken to teams that could draft him. Is he pulling a Jagr and manipulating the NHL Draft?

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers missed a chance at greatness, and they know it. Florida Panthers’ disappointment.

It would sting a lot less if they recognized, they were run over by a better team. The series wasn’t that close.

Vegas Hockey Now: I inserted the into the links later yesterday — but it was a crazy parade in Vegas. William Karlsson stole the show and earned an annoyed look from the president of hockey operations, George McPhee. William Carrier ended Karlsson’s mic time, one of the great celebration speeches, when he hoisted Karlsson over his shoulder and carried him away. It was a pretty good “knight” for the Vegas Golden Knights.
