(PHN) — Months after the first NHL teams released their third jerseys, Tuesday the Pittsburgh Penguins unexpectedly released their third jersey–a golden homage to their early and mid-1980’s golden sweaters with black sleeves and gold stripes. The team will also wear gold-colored helmets, too.

Adidas created the sweaters. They will be worn 12 times this season. The first will be Nov. 15 at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Here is a complete list of the games which the Penguins will wear their third jersey: https://www.nhl.com/penguins/team/third-jersey-schedule

The sweaters will go on sale Nov. 15, for a five-day period exclusively at PensGear stores. Afterward, they will be available at DICK’S Sporting Goods stores ,shop.nhl.com, adidas.com, and adidas.ca – in addition to the PensGear locations at PPG Paints Arena and SouthSide Works.

According to the Penguins, the new design incorporated elements from the 2017 Stadium Series uniform and the heritage of gold jerseys worn by Mario Lemieux and the Penguins in the 1980s.

From Addidas, “Creating a signature look for these new thirds, the crest spotlights the standalone skating penguin on a single-toned gold sweater. Mixing the past with the present, the contrasting black sleeves are highlighted with white and gold striping that are inspired from the Penguins’ 1984 jerseys, while the letters and numbering mirror the current home and away jerseys. Additional design details include the sleeve numbers being raised to the shoulder of the jersey to mimic the 1980s look.”
