Dan’s Daily: Penguins Trade Buzz; Fleury Calling the Shots

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins Jake Guentzel. Penguins trade chatter. News and NHL trade rumors, too.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are a hot commodity in the NHL trade rumors. Elliotte Friedman revealed a handful of teams that have called about Jake Guentzel. And today is just about the most important game facing the Penguins as they host the Philadelphia Flyers. This writer opines the Penguins are out of time to make things work with players who aren’t performing, and it’s time to serve some press box nachos. The teams the Penguins are chasing for a playoff berth won on Saturday, except for the Flyers, setting up a new Penguins’ playoff scenario.

Wild GM Bill Guerin said Marc-Andre Fleury will decide what happens at the NHL trade deadline. Tyler Bertuzzi had a hat trick as the Toronto Maple Leafs are red-hot. Noah Hanafin had three points, and NHL trade chatter started to include Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark.

Let me tell you about my Saturday. I went to the Penguins’ practice and stopped at Best Buy to look for a good camera to take better photos at practice. I came home and wrote. And watched hockey. Started training our new Vegas Golden Knights writer. And watched hockey. Also, I’m still addicted to the Unsolved Mysteries channel–it’s on Fubo and the Google TV app. Getting modern updates to the 1980s and ’90s Robert Stack shows is too much fun. The hairstyles are pretty epic, too.

If anyone can recommend a sub-$500 camera for me, I’d be much obliged.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Strap in–lots to read.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: There was one unpublicized honor for Jaromir Jagr. As far as I know, we’re the only ones to write about it. This honor has a nice “ring” to it for Jaromir Jagr.

Emil Bamstrom participated in his first practice. He’s not getting a plum line assignment, but is he the one to spark the offense? The report from Penguins practice.

A hot take? Coach Mike Sullivan admitted the team was spirited Tuesday against the Islanders but not so much against the Montreal Canadiens. The struggles continue, and it’s time players start losing their jobs: Penguins opinion.

Sullivan also played coy regarding Jake Guentzel’s status.

Last night on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman let rip. The Headlines Segment is always the best of the NHL trade rumors, and last night Guentzel was the featured item. Friedman named a handful of teams who are interested. He also confirmed our expectations and said a goalie might be available on the NHL trade block.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Boston Hockey Now: The goalie market has some high-priced options. It seems some teams might take advantage of the high prices and put their goalie on the market, too (*ahem, Kyle Dubas). Have the Boston Bruins put Linus Ullmark on the block?

The Athletic ($): The Minnesota Wild are in a wild-card battle but on the outside. Guerin is leaving it up to Fluery–should he stay, or should he go? Fleury will decide if he’s traded or stays.

NYIHockeyNow: The good news is the Islanders lost. The bad news is the Tampa Bay Lightning won. Things are still wrong with the New York Islanders.

Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers peppered New York Rangers goalie Ilya Shesterkin but couldn’t get there. Get the inside scoop as the Penguins got some good news in their playoff chase when the New York Rangers won their 10th straight, and the Philadelphia Flyers lost.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Things are tense in New Jersey. The Devils’ power play has been spotty, the team still isn’t winning enough games to get into a playoff spot, and fans are clamoring for Lindy Ruff’s job. The coach lashed out at the media and then walked it back for creating undo pressure on the New Jersey Devils.

There are only two or three reporters, including our James Nichols, who cover the Devils, and none of them are terribly negative. Imagine if poor Lindy was in Canada. Or even Pittsburgh?

Colorado Hockey Now: The Toronto Maple Leafs are cooking. Tyler Bertuzzi, who had not scored in 19 games, had a hat trick, and the TML beat the visibly frustrated Colorado Avalanche.

Detroit Hockey Now: Yes, it looks like Detroit is for real. They overwhelmed the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Does anyone else miss the Norris Division battles? Good karma launched the Detroit Red Wings yesterday.
