NHL Season, Pittsburgh Penguins Practice Facility UPMC Lemieux Complex

And, here we go. The Pittsburgh Penguins begin training camp this morning at the UPMC Lemieux Complex at 10 a.m. The team invited 56 players to camp and will divide into three squads for camp practices and scrimmages. Preseason games begin on Monday with the neutral site game at Penn State against Buffalo.

Thursday, defenseman Marcus Pettersson accepted the Penguins qualifying offer and tight salary cap situation instead of holding out for a market-value deal, so the Penguins are at full strength. The team also invited Prospects Challenge team members Chase Berger who just completed his four-year career at Penn State, and Jon Lizotte who finished his collegiate career at St. Cloud State.

Both Lizotte and Berger played several games for the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the end of last season. Lizotte had two points (1g, 1a) in three games. Berger had two points (1g, 1a) in six games.

The Penguins season begins with the controversy and a hint of strife from last season in the rearview mirror. Phil Kessel was traded to Arizona for Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman PO Joseph. The Penguins signed Brandon Tanev, drafted Sam Poulin and Nathan Legare (among others). Jack Johnson has reportedly been working on his skating over the summer. And Matt Cullen retired, which will clear space for Teddy Blueger.

The new identity which the Penguins bosses are hoping to instill is a team-game and responsibility. Matt Murray learned that lesson from the Penguins quick playoff exit in April.
