When the Pittsburgh Penguins spent a second-round draft choice in Tristan Broz two years ago, he made it clear his goal was to break into pro hockey as quickly as possible.

“I want to play in the NHL,” Broz said at the time. “That’s been my dream since I was little …. (When) I’m ready to do that, and the Penguins feel I’m ready to do that, then I’m definitely going to take that opportunity.”

Well, it looks as if that opportunity could come a bit sooner than many might have anticipated.

Broz said that in his most recent discussion about it with Penguins officials, roughly two months ago, the idea of him leaving the University of Denver after his junior season was on the table.

“The plan was probably … the last time I talked to them, at least at the end of next year,” he said during the Penguins’ recent development camp. “One more year in college. Have a good year.”
