Pittsburgh Hockey Now released its first unofficial Pittsburgh Penguins lines and depth chart before training camp. The following list is based on pairings and extrapolations from the first week of training camp. The list will be continually updated each week into the season. Forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Jimmy Hayes are battling to be the 14th forward on the NHL roster, but there is not a guarantee the Penguins will keep 14 forwards.

Aston-Reese was given a starring role in the camp scrimmages–playing on Evgeni Malkin’s left wing.

Hayes, 28,  scored nine points (3g, 6a) in 33 games with the Devils last season. Aston-Reese, 24, scored six points (4g, 2a) in 16 games with the Penguins.

Starting goalie Matt Murray will be backed up by either Tristan Jarry or Casey DeSmith, both are waiver-exempt. DeSmith is the likely backup as Jarry continues to develop in the AHL and DeSmith has so far been solid in camp.

Two prospects showing well in camp are Sam Milteic and Anthony Angello. Angello, 22, could make himself a mid-season call-up candidate with continued work and jam. Miletic is a dynamic player who needs a year or more of professional level seasoning but has shown offensive gifts from the left wing.

*Riley Sheahan has been excluded from the list due to injury. He is day-to-day, but not yet participated in training camp.
