Preds GM Disses New Penguins Forward, Details Trade Negotiations

Tommy Novak has only put up 22 points in 52 games this season, but the dichotomy between this season and his 45-point campaign last season was met with a bit of blunt honesty by Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz.

The Penguins acquired Novak and defenseman Luke Schenn Wednesday evening in exchange for Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

When discussing the trade Thursday evening with Nashville media, Trotz not only knocked Novak’s performance but his ability.

“When he was a fourth-line, league-minimum guy and scoring while getting some sheltered minutes, that fit him just fine,” Trotz told reporters. “When you move up the lineup, it’s harder to find your space and be productive. If you want to move up the lineup and get paid more, there’s more responsibility.

“There’s a reason that guys get the higher salaries because most nights, they’re getting the harder matchups, and they’re expected to produce.”

Ouch.

Before detailing the trade negotiations, Trotz characterized his trade deadline strategy simply, “I’m just sort of cleaning the porch, if you will. Moving forward.”

Nashville has been one of the most disappointing teams in the NHL this season. After numerous high-profile free agent signings, including Jonathan Marchessault from the Vegas Golden Knights and Steven Stamkos from the Tampa Bay Lightning, much was expected. However, Nashville currently has the third-worst record in the league.
