Penguins-Stars Preview
The early season has been two different brands of hockey for the Penguins and Stars through the first few games.
For the Penguins, it has been up-tempo, high octane offense, trying to win a track meet each game. For the Stars it’s been tight-checking, low scoring, slog-it out, defensive hockey.

Bets We Like with a Penguins Win
Jeff Carter OVER 0.5 points (+190, BetMGM)
[bet-promo id=”24578″ ]
The Penguins are without some prolific offensive players, but they’re still putting pucks in the net. That’s because vets like Jeff Carter have stepped up to fill top 6 roles and be productive.
Carter is the Penguins de facto first line center and has been integral to their offensive out put so far. While Danton Heinen may be the surprise leader in goals for the Penguins at this point, Carter and veteran defenseman Kris Letang each lead the team with four points. They’ll have to continue to provide offense for the Penguins to keep winning. (Letang is -125 for the same bet, which is why we went with Carter – better odds.)

Bets We Like with a Stars Win
Stars to WIN the first period (+205, FanDuel Sportsbook)
[bet-promo id=”23805″ ]
Dallas is a better team when it has the lead than playing from behind, and we know Pittsburgh likes to jump out on teams, as they have in each game so far. So, if the Stars are going to win today, they’ll need to get on the board early and force Pittsburgh to try and claw back. As such, look for an early push from the Stars – especially as they at the end of the road trip. It’s easy to have tired legs after playing in four cities in six days. Dallas’ best chance in this game is early. So, if you think they can win. Take them to win the first period.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome
Stars to win and OVER 5.5 goals (+330, DraftKings)
[bet-promo id=”23817″ ]
Each of Pittsburgh’s games to this point have been seven goals or more. Each of the stars games have been five goals or fewer. Something is bound to give.
The thinking here is the Penguins offense finally comes back to earth a bit and isn’t as dangerous as it’s been to this point in the season. Meanwhile, Dallas gets an empty netter to win a tight game and beat the over.
It’s good odds considering Dallas is just +105 on the money line. We think you should give it a shot.

Penguins vs. Stars Prediction
[bet-promo id=”23812″ ]
The Stars score early in this one. Maybe even a couple of goals, surprising the Penguins. Pittsburgh claws back and gets back into the game. Maybe even tying it. But Dallas finally breaks through with third period goal and then an empty netter. Yes, that’s a lot of crystal balling going on with this pick. It just has that kind of feel to it. The Penguins have been riding the shoulders of players not expected to carry such weight. Meanwhile, Dallas doesn’t want to limp home for their opener with three straight losses and their one win coming in overtime. This sets up as the Penguins first regulation loss of the season.
Prediction: Stars 4, Penguins 2.
