Evgeni Malkin was among those who participated for the Pittsburgh Penguins at an optional morning skate Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena ahead of a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Malkin was excused from practice Monday to attend to a personal matter.

Filip Hallander, who is dealing with a lower-body injury, was not on the ice.

Coach Mike Sullivan after the skate dubbed all players game-time decision other than at goaltender. Casey DeSmith will start. Take that for what you will. Tristan Jarry played Saturday in an overtime loss at Montreal and afterward said he has been dealing with a physical issue. Sullivan, however, dismissed any notion that Jarry’s deployment is affected by that.

Others participating were forwards Bryan Rust, Brock McGinn, Kasperi Kapanen, Ryan Poehling, Jeff Carter and Teddy Blueger, defensemen Jeff Petry, Chad Ruhwedel, P.O Joseph and Marcus Pettersson, and goaltender Jarry.

The Penguins are coming off a 2-0-1 road trip that included a 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs on Friday and a concluding 4-3 loss Saturday at Montreal that left the Penguins feeling as if they could have or should have earned all six points on the trip rather than five.
