Penguins vs. Devils

On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins will play host to the New Jersey Devils at the PPG Paints Arena. The Devils are 3-2-0, while the Penguins are 3-2-2, having lost two straight in regulation after earning at least a point in their first five games. This is the first meeting of the season between the Metropolitan Division rivals.

Let’s get into our Penguins vs. Devils betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this October 30, 2021 matchup.

Penguins-Devils Preview

The Penguins need some of their charges to get back on the ice ASAP as Kris Letang is the latest Penguin to go out of the lineup as he entered the Covid-19 protocol and will miss tonight’s game.

Pittsburgh has already been without Sidney Crosby (wrist) and Evgeni Malkin (knee) since the start of the season and then lost Bryan Rust (lower body) and Jeff Carter (Covid-19 protocol) after just a couple games.

And even though they were able to stem that tide and actually play well enough to get eight of a possible 10 points in their first five games, they’ve now been outscored 9-1 in their last two contests and suddenly look as vulnerable as they should have been this whole time.

Help could be on the way though. Coach Mike Sullivan announced Friday that both Crosby and Carter will be game-time decisions for this contest against the Devils, and the optimism in his conversation about both indicated that could well be the case.

Both players would add a huge boost to a Penguins team that needs it.

As for the Devils, this trip to Pittsburgh marks their first road game of the season, and they are well-rested, having three days off since losing to Calgary on Tuesday.

New Jersey has been inconsistent on both ends of the ice despite the winning record thus far and now they found out that star forward Jack Hughes will miss at least six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

With Hughes out, only two Devils in the lineup have scored more than one goal – Pavel Zacha and Dawson Mercer.

Bets We Like with a Penguins Win

Penguins to win by 3-plus goals (+260, BetMGM)

It’s not every day that we would suggest you bet such a spread in hockey, but this game could be just that perfect storm. The Devils really struggle to score and are without a top player. The Penguins “probably” get back to veteran centers who could jump start their offense again. And, if in fact Crosby returns, you know the home crowd at PPG Paints arena will be loud and bring a lot of energy, affecting the game’s momentum right off the bat. We think this is a slam dunk game for the Penguins. Normally, with Philadelphia on tap, and that’s the Penguins next game, this could be considered a lookahead contest, but, the Penguins have a few days off before the Flyers and they could be getting Crosby back, that means the Devils are in the crosshairs. Pity them.

Bets We Like with a Devils Win

Devils to win the first period (+215, FanDuel Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23805″ ]

We really don’t like the Devils to win this game. All the stars are lining up for the Penguins. So much so that we aren’t even recommending this “safer” bet for the Devils.

But, if you think New Jersey has a chance to win – and those odds would increase a bit if Crosby and Carter are left out of the lineup, then betting the Devils to win the first period might be your only real chance at getting some prop cushion in case you are betting the Devils to win outright, which is not advised.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Under 6 goals (-120, DraftKings Sportsbook)

Wait, the Penguins are going to win by three AND this is going to stay under? Yes. The Devils will be lucky to score (we like Tristan Jarry against New Jersey too – a .924 save percentage in six career games vs. the Devils – and although it wasn’t announced at the time of this writing, he likely gets the nod for Pittsburgh after Casey DeSmith started Thursday.) and we believe the Penguins will be able to get a few goals on the Devils, who are averaging allowing three goals a game. Could a push come into play here? Maybe. But we don’t see it going beyond that.

Penguins vs. Devils Prediction

[bet-promo id=”23812″ ]

Reading the tea leaves, we believe both Crosby and Carter will play, and if so, we like at least one of them to score as well (bets were off the board at the time of this writing). The Devils have only beaten winless Chicago, the expansion Seattle Kraken and a Buffalo Sabres team playing way over their heads. Pittsburgh, injuries and all, are better then all three. We like the Penguins in an easy one.

Prediction: Penguins 4, Devils 1.
